Regardless of if you are a fashion enthusiast or not, we all had that moment. Your eyes glued to the screen, trying to absorb all the image. But the scene is not guilty of capturing your attention. Instead, it is the outfits, the combinations you could have never thought of. They are iconic, fearless and breathtaking. We grew up with fashion, but it never outgrew us. These are some of the outfits that made us:
1. Andi Anderson’s iconic yellow dress
Designed by Carolina Herrera exclusively for the film How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days, this dress took more than Ben’s breath away. That dress signifies more than just an accessory. It is elegant yet simple, carrying the tension of the moment you see in their eyes: how they fell hard into each other’s traps. And until now, this scene carries generations that continue to discover the power of the yellow dress.
2. Ugh as if! I would forget to include this one
Clueless is an epitome of fashion especially Cher’s and Dionne’s striped sets, the inspiration for many Halloween costumes even 28 years after the movie’s premiere. The yellow off-the-rack outfit was so iconic that it had Clueless costume designer Mona May saying, “Oh my god, this is it.”
Clueless is one of those movies: fun, clever and full of nonsense. And these iconic sets combine the seriousness of the schoolgirl outfit with not so serious characters.
3. The court outfit of Elle Woods
Legally Blonde broke stereotypes as Elle Woods entered that courtroom with that pink long sleeve dress and heels. The sound of her high heels along with her puffy blonde hair hitting her shoulder was so legendary it deserves a spot in the hall of fame. Because we cannot lie to ourselves, we all wanted to be Elle Woods when she said, “But if I’m gonna be a partner at a law firm by the time I’m 30, I need a boyfriend who’s not such a complete bonehead.”
4. “13 Going on 30” thriller dress
The definition of Cindy Lauper’s song: “Girls just want to have fun.” Jenna’s dress in 13 Going on 30 is evidence that fashion does not have to be serious. Instead, it can be colorful, playful and still make a statement.
BONUS: Audrey Hepburn’s “Breakfast at Tiffany’s” black dress and Maria Antoinette’s film fashion
One shows the origins of the little black dress we dream of, the other with its puffy and extravagant dresses. This fashion inspired trends we are living now, like the little black dress or being all about bows and puffy skirts.
