I’ll be 100 percent honest with you. I’m almost 20 years old, and I consider The Princess Diaries (both the first and the second) some of the best movies ever created. I can recite almost all of it verbatim, and my friends only slightly judge me. Mia is a character most girls can find relatable on some level (although, sadly, not necessarily the princess part).
1. Never let others kill your vibeJoe is hands-down the best bodyguard ever. Not only does he protect Mia’s life, but he also reminds her how important it is to not let others bring her down.
2. Be punctual Queen Clarisse delivers the forever-quotable line, “A queen is never late. Everyone else is simply early.” We’re all late sometimes, but a queen always handles it with grace. Take everything in stride.
3. #treatyoselfYou have to treat yourself every now and then. Make take time to relax admist busy schedules!
4. Your best friend will always have your backThe greatest part about your best friend is that she always seems to have your back when you need it the most — whether you’re stressed out over an exam, or in Mia’s case, trying to deal with a really cute guy attempting to steal her throne. When it comes down to it, Lilly is certainly the most loyal (and sassiest) best friend out there.
5. Laugh it offBeing able to laugh at yourself is important. Mia is silly and full of quirks, and that’s part of what makes her so lovable to everyone.
6. Believe in yourselfWhen Mia brings the children from the local orphanage to walk in a parade with her, she advises, “To be a princess, you have to believe that you are a princess. You’ve got to walk the way you think a princess would walk. So, you gotta think tall, you gotta smile and wave, and just have fun.” We all have days when we feel down, but it’s important to remember that they are just that. You just have to pick your head up, and carry on.
7. You’re never too old to have a little funSure, maybe mattress surfing down a huge staircase in a palace is a little dangerous. But for Mia, nothing is off limits. Get in touch with your inner child every now and then; she inspires us to never lose touch with our youthfulness.
Needless to say, any time I watch The Princess Diaries, my mood instantly improves. I don’t know about you, but I’m feeling a movie marathon, collegiettes™!
