It’s been a week since University of Florida decision day. Acceptances were announced Feb. 8, and there are undoubtedly thousands of smiling new baby Gators all around the country. It’s never to early. To all of those admitted, or even those unfortunate enough to enroll in a different institution, here’s a few unexpected changes that come with college but probably won’t make it into your orientation packet:
1. Pedestrians Crossing!

Even on a summer or weekend visit, it’s hard to explain how much and how irritating the amount of foot traffic on campus can be. Not to mention the danger of unadjusted drivers making turns into the sea of a busy cross walk. Just be aware that at certain times of the day, it seems like every single student is walking, or even worse, biking through one area.
2. You can stand under my umbrella (ella, ella, ay, ay, ay)

Obviously, sooner or later in your college career, you will face some precipitation. However, unlike high school where the majority of your time is spent indoors, you will spend some serious time outside once you get to college. Buildings can seem miles apart, and we all know there’s about one parking space per thousand students. Basically, you’ll be walking. Do yourself a favor by keeping a collapsible umbrella in your bag before you learn the hard way — especially in this Florida weather.
3. Expect Some Enthusiasm

Gone are the days of optional after-school student government meetings for résumé boosting. With so many options of activities to get involved in, things can get intense. Any serious organization requires an almost exhaustive entry process, so stock up on business casual.
On the other hand, through the “free zones” of campus (for UF students this is the Reitz and Turlington) you can expect all-out performances from student dance groups, aggressive awareness flyer-ing, and life-or-death fantasy zombie battles complete with full make-up and costumes. This is, in a way, a precursor to the real world. People pick activities they have passion for, and that enhances the experience, but it also turns extracurricular activities into a bigger commitment than most are used to. Oh and football games…We’re pretty enthusiastic about those, too.
4. Pajama Day (Everyday)

I remember high school, so if you’re already planning what to wear every day for the first week, let me stop you there. The norm in lecture hall is undeniably workout clothing, or more realistically, pajamas. Obviously, you don’t have to go along, but it’s actually pretty comforting to know that when you’re late to class, you can blend in effortlessly and curl up in leggings.
And I’ve saved the best for last! The best thing you can expect from college is….
5. Freedom!
