All I ever hear about during March or April is what other people plan to do over spring break. I’ve never been the type of person who goes anywhere special over the breaks or holidays—my family has always preferred staying at home and saving money. For a long time I just stayed in bed on my computer during the break, but I never realized there are cheap or free things to do that can be really fun as long as you have the right attitude about them.
1. Hammock outside
As long as you can find a few sturdy trees, set up a hammock outside and enjoy nature. You can even bring your laptop outside with you to surf the internet, just try not to sit in bed and do it like I always did. There are plenty of hammocks online for less than $20 that you can buy for spring break.
2. Read a new book
During the school year I never have time to read. Instead of playing on your phone or on the computer, try reading one new book. As long as you devote enough time for this, you can finish the book in only a few days and have the rest of the break to be unproductive.
3. Catch up on tv shows or start a new one
During the school year I find myself missing episodes of certain shows because of how busy I am. But now that you have an entire week off, you can catch up on everything you’ve missed! Or you can just start a new show.
4. Paint
Just because you aren’t good at drawing, it doesn’t mean you still can’t paint. Go to a local store and buy some cheap paint, brushes, and paper. I found painting to be very relaxing and stress-relieving. I’m not an artist by any means but I loved what I created.
5. Cook for the family
Show your family how much you miss them during the school year by cooking them a meal. You can either do this with them as a fun family activity, or do it by yourself.
6. Movie marathon
This can either be a group activity with your friends and family or just something to do by yourself. Find either some of your favorite movies or movies that you have never seen before and spend a whole day watching them.
7. Start a new video game
Video games are expensive so this may be best for someone with siblings who already have video games you’ve never played before. Depending on the game, it can be a fun, immersive experience that can distract you for hours.
8. Reorganize or clean out old stuff
This is not fun for most people but if you create a spring break music playlist for this, cleaning might not be so bad. Go through your old clothes and get rid of things you never wear anymore. If you take them to a store that buys used clothes, you can even make some money over break!
9. Go to the park
If you have a local park, take a walk or ride a bike around it. You can take artsy pictures or bring a journal to write/draw in. Have a picnic with friends or family!
10. Indoor spa day
Whether it be with your friends who are also staying in town for the break or you do it alone, grab some cheap face masks at the store and relax. Paint your nails while you watch your favorite movie!
