Like many others, I picked up a couple new hobbies during the pandemic lockdown. One of those just happened to be knitting, and since I started, I’ve finished a full-length scarf and a triangle shawl! The cool thing about knitting, though, is that it’s a multitasking hobby—you can totally supplement your knitting with something else you enjoy. Here are my top three activities to make your knitting hobby a certified Self Care™ event.
- Listen to audiobooks!
-
I never used to be able to listen to audiobooks because I was never able to make myself concentrate enough to get anything out of them. My mind would wander, or I’d simply not absorb any of the story. I needed something to do with my hands, to make myself focus while I was listening, and that’s where knitting came in. By occupying myself with a knit project, I can combine two of my favorite hobbies, and I get more out of both: I get to read more than I normally do during classes, and I get further along in my knit projects than I would if I weren’t sitting down for an hour or two in the evening.
- Jam out to some music!
-
I love my music, and I also love an excuse to sit by myself and just listen to that music—it’s like going to my happy place. (Anybody else like to sit around and write stories in their heads? No? Just me?) If I’m actively knitting while listening to that music, I find that I get that alone time with my music that I may not get if others think I’m not doing anything. Spotify has plenty of playlists for whatever vibe or scenario you feel like cooking up, so have at it!
- binge some netflix!
-
Personally, I like rewatching my favorite shows because (a) it’s not vital for me to pay 100% attention to the screen and (b) I already know when I need to look up. My current endeavor is watching all 8 seasons of The Vampire Diaries for the fourth time, and I much prefer to occupy myself by knitting instead of scrolling through Instagram while pretending to watch the episode.
Do you have any more ideas for things I can do while pumping out my next project? Let me know!
