We all like to consider ourselves Netflix and film connoisseurs but, if you haven’t delved into the land of independent film, you have a ways to go. In order to get the full Netflix experience, you have to be willing to watch things you may have never heard of. The next time you’re not buried in assignments and you have a little free time on your hands (that you’re willing to dedicate to doing absolutely nothing) consider watching the following movies when you decide to binge on Netflix.
1. Liberal Arts
Who knew the Olsen twins had a younger sister? Well, you do now because she’s in this movie. This movie focuses on a thirty-something year old man trying to figure life out. After a visit to his alma mater to give a speech in honor of his favorite professor, a few students teach him that it is perfectly fine not knowing what you’re doing. We appreciate this film for reinforcing to us the idea that sometimes it takes a special individual to help bring out the best in us.
2. Stuck in Love
Everyone loves a good rom-com. This film centers around a dysfunctional family filled with unique indivisuals who all find themselves bitten by the love bug. There are happy moments, sad moments, and unbelievably funny ones. If you like cute but not too sappy love stories, this one is for you.
3. The Giant Mechanical Man
The movie centers around Tim, a weirdly awkward individual who dresses as a metallic giant and performs street art. Tim meets Janice, an over-qualified juice saleswomen at the Detroit Zoo. Although it might seem slow at some times, this movie has a great message, which is what it takes to overcome societal pressures and “find your bliss.” (Whatever that means.)
Honorable mentions: Girl Most Likely, Detachment, and Copenhagen.
