The first two weeks of February were all about the New York Fashion Week Runways and the trends we saw for spring 2020. With the cold, gloomy weather, mixed with the random days with temperatures in the 70s, it can be easy to feel those winter blues as we dream of warmer weather and fewer layers. Whether you were following the runways or just started seeing people promoting new spring trends, here are some spring fashion trends that we saw on the runway and how to wear it on your college campus and in your daily life once the weather gets warmer. Â
- Bold Collars
-
From Marc Jacobs to Victoria Beckham we saw models strut down the runway wearing clothes that resembled ’70s disco fashion. The trendy disco collar comes back in a big way this spring, as detailed collars are seen from many designers and will be seen in various retail stores for spring collections. If the big, bold collars aren’t your taste, there are ways you can take this trend and weave it into your current style. Try a blouse with a tie collar and pair it with some straight leg jeans and sneakers for a chic, casual look that’s perfect for class presentations when you need to be more dressed up than normal athleisure.Â
- Bright Colors
-
The winter is full of darker colors as well as nudes, and it can be hard to feel super happy when your clothes are dark. In the spring there is a dramatic change in the clothes offered in stores. The runways saw a lot of bright, highlighter, and neon colors. If these super bold colors aren’t your scene, you can still incorporate these colors into your wardrobe. If you have a mostly black and white outfit, the shoes or bag can be a brighter color to pop without overwhelming the outfit.
- Blazers
-
Blazers were worn by models this fashion week and it is the symbol of a boss babe. These blazers can make you feel super productive and powerful just by wearing it, however, you don’t have to wear it only in a corporate setting. These blazers can be worn out of the boardroom and are styled by bloggers as street styles. These blazers can be a staple piece in your wardrobe as they can be dressed up for the professional times and dressed down for easy outfits for class. These blazers can be layered on top of a t-shirt, jeans, and sneakers for a comfortable look that provides enough warmth for warmer spring weather.
- Patterns
-
Winter clothes can be so dull and bland so the spring fashion trends are usually focused on patterns. As the flowers bloom, more clothes have floral prints. The great thing about prints is that there is a pattern for everyone, whether you love bold, colorful patterns or subtle, monochromatic patterns like polka dots. The key to styling patterns in a way that feels casual but cute is mixing the patterns with more neutral and staple pieces that you already own. If the top is a pink, floral blouse, try pairing it with denim and brown accessories. This will make the patterned blouse the statement piece while avoiding conflicting elements. To start mixing patterns, start small with shoes that have a different pattern but a similar color scheme. The distance between the top and shoes along with the same color pallet will allow the patterns to work together rather than conflict. If you feel bold and want to mix patterns directly, try pairing pieces that may have the same colors such as black and white which will appeal to the eye.
- Dramatic Sleeves
-
Lastly, one trend that is a blast from the past is dramatic sleeves. Retailers such as ASOS and H&M have been selling tops with puffed and sheer sleeves and now more options are available. The sleeves seen on the runway are bold and dramatic, but you can have a more subtle effect in your wardrobe. A simple white tee can be elevated by puffed sleeves and can spice up your outfit. A black blouse can be more stylish with tulle sleeves to dress up your “going out” outfit while still keeping it casual and comfortable for dancing.
Taking these bold runway trends and implementing them into common streetwear can be a great way to amp up your personal style while still staying comfortable in what you are wearing. If you have gotten tired of wearing the same old thing this winter, consider shopping for some of these new trends to add to your wardrobe this spring!Â
