On Friday, October 23, Arianators rejoiced after seeing that Ariana Grande finally dropped her new single “positions.” Grande teased the new single over a week before with an Instagram video of her typing the word on a keyboard, and immediately fans were excited. “Positions” is an upbeat pop anthem, which Grande is known for, with flirty lyrics and a precise rhythm. Grande also released an accompanying music video, directed by Dave Meyers. The video shows Grande as madame President, holding press conferences, signing bills in the Oval Office, and awarding USPS workers with a gold medal, while also rocking iconic outfits that resemble the style of Jackie Kennedy.
I listened to the song and saw the video that Friday morning, and I was completely blown away. I wouldn’t consider myself a die-hard fan by any means, but I definitely enjoy Grande’s records. My personal favorite album is her most recent release, “thank you, next.” This new single is definitely a step in the right direction for Grande. With every era, she finds herself cementing herself more and more as a pop icon. The new song might not have hard-hitting lyrics or a breakout song structure, but it’s catchy, fun, and flirty; some qualities that Grande has already mastered in her career.
Along with the new single, Ariana Grande announced on social media that her upcoming 6th studio album, “positions,” will be out October 30th. She also wasted no time confirming the album’s tracklist, which included collabs with Doja Cat, The Weeknd, and Ty Dolla $ign. In a recent tweet, Grande stated, “I don’t have a top three or anything! Everything goes hand in hand. This project is my favorite for many reasons and I really can’t wait for it to be yours.” Fans, including myself, are already coming up with theories and predictions for the new songs. Personally, I’m the most excited about the song “motive,” which features Doja Cat. I have a feeling this song will be a banger and a catchy pop anthem in no time. However, it’s hard to make a prediction about the concept of this new album.
Grande’s past two albums have defined important times in her life. “Sweetener” was a symbol of Grande rising from the ashes and gaining her confidence back after the tragic terrorist attack at her 2017 Manchester concert, and “thank you, next” showed how Grande could love herself and embrace her singleness after her public breakup with ex-fiance Pete Davidson. It will be interesting to see where Grande takes this new album, and what she plans to explore and discuss through this new body of work. But one thing is for sure: Grande is a force to be reckoned with, and not even 2020 can stop her.
