I don’t know about you, but every month I become so fixated on a few specific songs that I leave them on repeat until my ears have had enough. And then I move on to the next.

Luckily, I haven’t gotten sick of the songs that have plagued my Spotify monthly wrap. That is why I wanted to share my top five current listens for January and what makes them so special.

“Trouble with This Bed” – Beach Weather

I’ll be honest the only song I knew from Beach Weather was “Sex, Love, Etc”. I wouldn’t call myself an avid fan of theirs, all I knew was that they made good music. One day “Trouble with This Bed” came on shuffle and I was hooked immediately. Maybe this song just makes perfect sense for January because it gives winter vibes, but it truly has been one of my favorite discoveries to start the year. The beat and instrumentals are very similar to The Neighborhood, especially songs from Wiped Out!

“Murder on the dancefloor” – Sophie ellis-bextor

I am absolutely obsessed with this song. Truly the greatest thing that came out of Saltburn. This is the type of music I want to hear at parties, the tunes that make you groove, the songs that make you stomp. No joke this song alone has been getting me through each week. It’s such an earworm that every time I listen to it, I physically cannot sit still. The beat and vocals are insanely energetic. The ending of Saltburn made so much sense. (IYKYK)

“last time i saw you” – niki minaj

Niki Minaj is not only the queen of rap but has such a good singing voice too! When first listening to “Pink Friday 2”, the tone immediately shifted when “Last Time I Saw You” started playing. The mellow and slower pace of the song is something different than what most people are used to from Niki Minaj, but I fell in love so fast. It is such a beautiful song on the album. I’m not crying, I promise.

“Steeeam” – Shelly

This song proves how TikTok has changed the music industry immensely. If I wasn’t on it I probably wouldn’t have discovered this song. I love everything about it. On top of that, apparently, it’s CLAIRO? I knew the lead singer’s voice sounded so familiar. I love this side quest of hers. The lyrics are so light and sweet, it’s just everything great about Indie music.

“Pink toes” – childish Gambino

This is the most spring song I have ever heard. It’s the type of song that makes you go, “life is good.” Childish Gambino is one of my all-time favorite artists and this just proves again how talented he is. Also, Jhene Aiko kills in this too! It’s such a catchy song and a great serotonin booster for walking around campus.

So far so good, is what this list tells me. I’ve always been open to all types and kinds of music so I am hoping that is what this new year brings me!
