Hailing from just twenty minutes outside of Athens, Georgia, Drew Hixson was born and raised in Winder, Georgia. Drew is a senior at the University of Georgia majoring in sports management. Since Drew was a young boy playing football every Saturday at the Rec center, he always knew he wanted to be a Georgia Bulldog and work in sports. Coming to college made his goal a lot more clear by taking a few sports management classes. He knew that by majoring in something he loved, he could continue down so many paths in the sporting industry and love what he does for a living every day of his life.Â
What are you involved in on campus?Â
I am not involved in any clubs on campus. I did spend 3 years with the cheerleading program and loved every minute of that experience. I enjoyed spending time with my close friends at practice, road games, and tournaments. I am currently working with the football program. I work with a group of guys (we call ourselves the Dawg Pound) in recruiting. We help coaches identify and evaluate high school kids from all over the country.
What do you like to do for fun?
I enjoy spending time with friends outside of school and work. Love relaxing and playing a round of golf every now and then. I also have a dog at home that keeps me busy sometimes lol.
What are your future career plans?
I plan on being the Director of Player Personnel for a major college football team in the near future. This job includes finding high school players all over the country that can help make an impact for your team. This role will also allow me to run the recruiting department and help make decisions about football personnel.
What’s your favorite thing about being a UGA student?
My favorite thing about being a UGA student is simply being a part of something so special. Both my parents graduated from UGA and have gone on to be very successful in their career. I love being able to follow in their footsteps and continue the legacy. I think UGA is the best college in the country as far as the balance between academics, athletics, and a college town. There’s no better place to go to school than Athens, Georgia, and I’m very fortunate to get this opportunity that not every student has.
Favorite UGA sports memory?Â
This is by far the toughest question yet. I would have to say cheering my first game between the hedges is something I will never forget. We played South Carolina at home when I was a freshman and beat them. The atmosphere and hype surrounding that game was unreal and definitely a memory I’ll hold onto forever.
You made the switch from a UGA cheerleader to working for the football team is that correct? Why did you do so? What do you do for the football team?Â
Yes, I cheered for 3 years and now work in the recruiting department for the football team. I am a part of a group of guys called the “Dawg Pound.” We simply try and find high school players around the country who we think can make a difference on our team. I currently work under Coach McGee and my job responsibilities include making travel plans for coaches, evaluating high school players, and making sure all of the information on recruits is quality controlled.
