Food For Thought: Finals Brain Food

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UGA chapter.

It’s finals week, and you know what that means! Whether you’re flipping over tables to secure a study room in the MLC or trying to cram a semester’s worth of chapters into an all-night study session, it can get crazy. When studying fails, these foods can give your brain the extra boost it needs to ace that exam.

Coffee

Yup, you read that right. The caffeine in coffee will energize you and keep you alert throughout your exam, and the antioxidants don’t hurt either. Just limit yourself to 2 to 3 cups, any more than that can make you jittery and distracted.

Nuts
Many nuts including cashews, walnuts, and almonds contain Vitamin E, which promotes cognitive awareness. Snack on them with other brain-boosting foods such as whole grains and dark chocolate.

Fish

Fish contain Omega-3 fatty acids, one of the building blocks of brain tissue. Fish such as salmon and mackerel help enhance memory and focus and decrease the risk of brain disease farther down the road.

Mint
Research has found that peppermint increases concentration and performance on tedious tasks aka exams. Chew a piece of minty gum before or during your exam, and you’ll instantly do better.

So stock up on minty gum, grab a can of nuts and eat a fish sandwich. If you are armed with these brain boosting foods your finals will be no match!
