To the University of Georgia, Sydnee Bush is a scholar, intern, Grady Ambassador, technology director, visual designer, assistant account executive, art director, office assistant, chair of assignments, and design editor to various on-campus organizations. To her friends, Sydnee is a humble over achiever and dread-headed powerhouse.
Sydnee is a student in Grady College Journalism and Communication, majoring in Advertising with a certificate in New Media and a minor in Spanish. As much as this senior anticipates her upcoming graduation and the moment she officially becomes an alumna, she still timidly counts down every “last” UGA event she has as an enrolled student.
After celebrating her ninth year cancer free of Hodgkin’s Lymphoma, Sydnee is the epitome of what defying the odds looks like. “It wasn’t my battle to fight,” said Sydnee, “I just relied on God and family to get me through.”
Ms. Bush also embodies the total package of a student that knows what it means to not just work hard, but where that hard work can take you. She recently took her advanced tech skills and interned the entire summer in Boston as an Associate Copy Writer for the advertising company, DigitasLBI. The regional president of the company, Barb Goose, was so impressed by her performance she even named dropped her in an interview.
“I felt very proud and honored,” said Sydnee, “it made me really think about UGA and how I’m appreciative of the opportunities it has given me.”
As one of the ambassadors of UGA’s Arch Society, not only does Sydnee represent herself but also The University of Georgia. Once she steps into those black heels, fastens her black skirt, and adjusts the black blazer baring the symbol of UGA’s arch; she is Vice Chair of Assignments. “It’s the reason why I understand what the words humility, accountability and passion are.” Sydnee credits the organization for showing her how social and professional aspects and family bonds intertwine. After two years of service in The Arch society, Sydnee does not like to think about the induction ceremony that takes place every spring semester but gets excited for new members to become ambassadors once she graduates.
Sydnee puts so much of herself into her academics and work experience that one would wonder, how does her me-time fit into her schedule and how exactly does she balance work versus play? “I think of my schedule as economics with the invisible hand,” in how her schedule manages to get done on its own. Even though she has no idea whether her life consists of balance right now “I get everything done whether for university, friends or family.”
Whether Sydnee can be seen giving campus tours to prospective students, rocking her red blazer at Dean Davis’ events as a Grady Ambassador, or working at the East Campus Village office, she still makes time to be the silly and down-to-earth person her peers love. We at HC can attest to that.
