What Your Halloween Costume Should Be Based on Your Favorite Midnights Track

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UGA chapter.

In this past week, Taylor Swift’s Midnights has swept the globe. Millions of people have spent hours poring over every note and lyric, and, of course, choosing favorites. To add an extra layer, here are tailored Taylor-themed costumes based on your favorite Midnights track! And yes, we are including the 3AM tracks.

  1. Lavender Haze” — Felicia from Valentine’s Day, 2010: Taylor’s Felicia in this movie is totally lost in her love for Taylor Lautner’s Willy. They were lost in their love, and for a song about being lost in love, I think this one would be perfect!
  1. Maroon” — Red (Taylor’s Version) Taylor: This one is just a no-brainer. “Maroon” is a grown-up “Red”, just like Red (TV) is a grown-up Red (2012). It’s the perfect look to add maroon accents to and totally rep your favorite tracks!
  1. Anti-Hero” — “Anti-Hero” Music Video Taylor: “Anti-Hero” is perhaps one of Taylor’s most emotional tracks yet. She talks about the insecurities she’s faced throughout her life and lays out her fears. It fits into that group of upbeat Taylor tracks that make you sob in a corner. This one actually has a music video you can refer to for costumes, and if you have a trio, you can be all the Taylors! Alternatively, be one of the bedsheet ghosts.
  1. Snow on the Beach (featuring Lana Del Ray)” — Rebekah Harkness: Rebekah Harkness is the subject of Taylor’s 2020 track, “the last great american dynasty.” “Snow on the Beach” makes so many references to Taylor’s Rhode Island house, making it perfect to dress up like Rebekah if this is your favorite track!
  1. You’re On Your Own, Kid” — Debut Taylor (2006): This song refers to how we lose our childhood a lot sooner than we think, and the new support systems we build aren’t exactly as supportive as we thought. We are forced to learn how to be comfortable alone, and that’s something Debut Taylor had to tackle as she quickly rose to fame.
  1. Midnight Rain” — “Delicate” Music Video Taylor: While this one doesn’t correspond to the lyrics as much, it discusses how life changes and reflects on the past and the choices or circumstances that shape our futures. “Delicate” Taylor symbolizes leaving behind your past expectations and embracing your new future, so this is the perfect look for you!
  1. Question…?” —Out of the Woods” Music Video Taylor: This may seem strange, but this song actually samples Taylor’s 1989 album in the beginning. This fit would be the perfect way to pay homage to such an iconic song while repping your new faves.
  1. Vigilante Shit” — Black Sequined Outfit Reputation Stadium Tour: Taylor was ready to do something bad, and you need to exude that energy on Halloween night. We are coming for our nemesis on October 31; they’re getting a trick, no treat. This fit says everything it needs to, and you will feel like THAT girl all night.
  1. Bejeweled” — MTV VMAs 2022 Taylor: This outfit was almost surely an easter egg for this song, so just go for it. This song is a slay, and this fit will 1000% win all the costume contests. This Halloween, we are exiting our “mirrorball” eras; it’s “Bejeweled” time babes.
  1. Labyrinth” — NYU Graduation Taylor: Blondie is so extra that she teased the first lyric on Midnights, way back in May, at her NYU commencement speech. “Breathe in, breathe through, breathe deep, and breathe out.’ She knows how breathing works, folks. So, pay homage to the queen of easter eggs, and dress like this one to honor this ICONIC track.
  1. Karma” — Karen, the snake from the Rep Tour: Imagine two people completely slandering you for like months on end, calling you a snake, only for sweet, sweet karma to come back to them, when the world realizes they were liars and cheats. It would feel pretty dang good. Want to add salt to the wound? Reclaim the snake and rub it in their face, because karma treated you well. Slays around the table.
  1. Sweet Nothing” — “Lover” Music Video Taylor: In this track, Taylor is happy and content. She doesn’t care about the world around her, because she has someone who is by her side, and she’s just content in life. Even when life gets loud, we go home to those we love, and even if it’s just for a second, we feel a moment of bliss and peace. “Lover” Taylor is in that bubble of contentedness and is the perfect costume for this song.
  1. Mastermind” — 2016 MET Gala Taylor: The girls who get this one, get it. The girls who don’t, don’t. She truly was the mastermind and went home and stalked him on the internet. So slay Tay.
  1. The Great War” — “Bad Blood” Taylor: Although this song is much more reminiscent of 2021’s “Renegade”, Taylor is fighting for something. So, this is Taylor, ready for battle, to fight the great war.
  1. Bigger Than the Whole Sky” — Omitted: If you’ve read up on this song, you may understand why this one is not on the list. “Bigger Than the Whole Sky” refers to really sensitive subject matter, so it will not be on this list.
  1. Paris” — “Begin Again” Music Video Taylor: This song is all about the ways we get lost in new love, and “Begin Again” is about opening ourselves up to love again. Also, the music video takes inspiration from the City of Love, and was even filmed there! It is the perfect fit.
  1. High Infidelity” — Emily Dickenson: The “ivy” stans know what I’m getting at. Turning your back on a loveless relationship because you find a loving one is a theme of both songs, and the Swifties have claimed “ivy” for Emily and Sue. So, let’s listen to them and dress up as Emily this Halloweekend.
  1. Glitch” — “Wildest Dreams” Tik Tok Taylor: This was one of our earliest Midnights easter eggs, and we clowned about it for so many months. So, throw it back to our clownery and again, honor Miss Swift’s intricate easter eggs.
  1. Would’ve, Could’ve, Should’ve” — Purple Dress Speak Now Tour: “Don’t you think 19 was too young? I should’ve known,” grew up and became “And I damn sure never would’ve danced with the devil, at 19.” Enough said.
  1. Dear Reader” — A Diary: Taylor is guiding us from her experiences on this track, and we should definitely take a page from her book in our costumes. Literally, we are going as diaries and we will look amazing — Princess Mia core. Can’t wait to see this one out on the streets.
  1. Hits Different” (Target Exclusive) — “All Too Well Short” Film Taylor: This song reminisces on a love that physically hurts to lose. What’s the perfect heartbreak, Taylor? “All Too Well” Taylor!

I hope to see these cute costumes this upcoming Halloweekend! And just a reminder, no matter how you feel about the world and yourself going into this holiday, just remember what Taylor says, “everybody is a sexy baby,” so whatever you wear, rock it with confidence!
