Holiday Survival Answers 101: Do you have a boyfriend?

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UIC chapter.

The semester is coming to end and finals are just around the corner. This means winter break has arrived, as well as the holidays. With the holidays coming up, your family will be visiting. All of this leads to a bunch of questions from your relatives, and they ask the number one question: do you have a boyfriend? That’s right, they ask about your love life and all you can think is “Oh crap, what do I say?” Here are a few possible answers you can tell them.

Your favorite celebrity

This answer is very simple and will get them off your back. You just have to say your favorite celebrity’s first name and describe them. For example, you can pick Nick Jonas. You would tell them your boyfriend’s name is Nick, describe how he is the perfect boyfriend. You say he has brothers and is a musician. When they ask how you met, you say at a concert, since he’s traveling with his band. When they ask for a photo, you pick a random Instagram model.

A Character from a Book

This fake boyfriend is just like your favorite celebrity. You might have to adjust your description, of course, since saying he’s a vampire or werewolf might have your parents thinking you’ve lost your mind and get you checked into a psych ward.

Your Willing Gay Friend

This one you can actually bring home to your family, if they ask you. This one is more legit and will involve fewer questions. All you have to do is dress him for the part and think of a backstory. Make sure he hasn’t met your parents yet so that you aren’t put in a sticky situation! He’s your best friend, so why wouldn’t he help you?

The Ex

This isn’t my first choice, but if you’re all out of options, this is the last resort. This will lead to a ton of questions of when you guys got back together and why you guys got back together. You’ll either be able to bring him home or make up an excuse for why he couldn’t make it. This will only work in your favor if your ex and you are on good terms. Also, it will help if your parents liked your ex when you guys were dating, that way it’s not awkward at the dinner table!

The Truth

You can always go the simple route and just tell your family the truth. You’re single and focusing on school. This route is simpler, since you won’t have to think of an elaborate story to tell your family. Sure, it means you have to deal with the constant suggestions of who your relatives think you would be great with or their advice to get you out on there in the dating scene, but it’ll be easier hearing that again like you have before!

Enjoy the holidays, and whoever you take home will be great, because a fake boyfriend is less complicated than a real one!
