Everything You Need to Know About the Sex and the City Reboot

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UK chapter.

On Sunday January 10, Sarah Jessica Parker, Cynthia Nixon and Kristin Davis all shared a trailer confirming the rumors we’d all been talking (and dreaming) about. “And Just Like That” we hear SJP say in her classic Carrie Bradshaw voice, and then we see her type “the story continues.” The trailer left us all with lots of questions, so here’s everything you need to know about the Sex and the City reboot, And Just Like That.

I couldn’t help but wonder…what about Samantha? Kim Cattrall is the only member of the original SATC group who did not share the trailer. In the past, Cattrall has been very vocal about not being interested in reprising the role of Samantha Jones and this has not changed.

While she has not made an official statement about her lack of involvement in And Just Like That, Cattrall liked a tweet the day after the announcement which read: “I absolutely love Sex and the City and whilst I am saddened that Samantha will not return, I applaud doing what is best for you and think this is great example of putting yourself first. Well done @KimCattrall ???.”

The series will not replace Samantha Jones with a new character (how could you ever replace Samantha Jones?) Sarah Jessica Parker told TMZ. “We’re not looking for a fourth character,” Parker stated, “We have New York City as a fourth character.”

And Just Like That is set to begin production in the late spring of 2021. While we don’t have an official release date yet, the series will be available on HBO Max, consisting of 10 half-hour episodes. According to Deadline, “the revival will follow Carrie, Miranda and Charlotte as they navigate the journey from the complicated reality of life and friendship in their 30s to the even more complicated reality of life and friendship in their 50s.”

All three of the show’s stars, Parker, Nixon and Davis, will executive produce the show. Michael Patrick King, the writer and director of both Sex and the City movies, will also be an executive producer.

In an interview with Vanity Fair, Sarah Jessica Parker revealed a few things that we can expect from And Just Like That. She said that COVID-19 will “obviously be part of the storyline.” The series is described as a ‘new chapter’ of the SATC world, one where Miranda and Charlotte are mothers to teenagers. Parker told TMZ, “there’ll be lots of interesting new characters that we’re excited about.”

SJP also noted that the series will have a writers’ room which is “incredibly diverse in a really exciting way.” She explained that the writers’ room is made up entirely of women, other than the returning showrunner, Michael Patrick King.
