Anyone who lives in Lexington knows that Keeneland is the city’s equivalent to the Kentucky Derby. For those few short weeks during the spring and fall, college students flock to the race track every Friday and Saturday in hopes of winning a few extra dollars.

But for non-Lexington natives, Keeneland might be a completely new experience. With these few tips, you can make the adventure painless and exciting!

Parking at Keeneland is absolute madness. Visitors probably want to either find someone to drive or take an Uber because once the day is over, getting out of the horse park will be nearly impossible.

Everyone parks in the grass and tailgates before actually going into the park. However, the walk over to the race track is a long, agonizing hike, especially if you are rocking a pair of heels. Take the shuttle! The short ride will save you from suffering countless blisters and some sore legs.

Once you get inside the race track, cell phone service will be slow and minimal. Make sure that you have already met up with your friends outside of the track because once you are in, you will not be able to escape the lack of signal.

If you are going to drink, do it while you are tailgating. The prices inside the park for a drink are insanely high for a few measly drops of alcohol. $18 for a few sips of a mimosa? Not worth it. That $8 bottle of wine you bought at Kroger? Worth it.

Perhaps the most crucial piece of advice for surviving a day at Keeneland: wear sunscreen. You would be surprised at how many people come to Keeneland with happy skin and leave with the worst sunburns known to mankind. Seriously. Pack the sunscreen.

A trip to Keeneland is something that every UK college student should experience. Whether you take your friends or your family, you are bound to find a good time. With these few tips and a little bit of sunscreen, your time at Keeneland is sure to be one to remember!
