It’s March, and with that brings the promise of spring, and with that spring break! There are a plenitude of options out there for how to spend the one week of bliss that we have outside of school. One of my favorite things to do, and what I plan to do this spring break, is travel. There is truly nothing like having the chance to experience a new culture and interact with people outside of your city, or even your country. The hotspots and common places for travel during spring break, such as Miami, Key West and Cabo are great travel destinations.. However, these places can get very crowded and more expensive for spring break-goers. The following are five cities which are not only affordable, but will provide you with the spring break experience of a lifetime.
- Chicago, IL
-
I may be biased, since I’m from the great city of Chicago, but from the iconic skyline, to Navy Pier, Millennium Park and the famous deep dish pizza, Chicago is the place to be. With it being one of the cheaper cities on this list, (Airbnbs for spring break land around $100), it allows you more flexibility on how to spend your time in the Windy City. The only downside is the very unpredictable weather that defines Chicago. It is to the point where I can’t tell you whether to bring your swimsuit or your winter coat. Either way, definitely put Chicago on your list of places to consider.
- San Francisco, CA
-
A city on the sunnier side and defined by the beautiful Golden Gate Bridge, San Francisco is often a city overlooked when it competes with Los Angeles. But, this city stands out not only with its vibrant landscape but also as a perfect town for the foodie traveler. From their seafood cuisine to their world-famous Chinatown, there is something to satisfy anyone’s palette.
- New Orleans, LA
-
While Mardi Gras may be the main draw to this vibrant city, there is definitely more that this city offers. With a culture enriched in history, New Orleans has its own unique vibe. Home to the historic French Quarter, be prepared to be impressed by the sights and smells and sounds of live music that the city has to offer. This is also another great city for food. The beignets alone make the whole trip worth it!
- Washington D.C.
-
The nation’s capital and spring break may not seem to mix well, but trust me when I say Washington D.C. has a lot to offer. If you love basking in the glow of sweet American history, this is the place for you. From the various museums they have to offer— my favorite was the Newseum, which sadly closed down — to the historic monuments, D.C. is a treasure trove. But beyond that, it is one of most beautiful places to walk around. All the times I have been, which has been four within the past year, I have made time within my plans to walk around the National Mall. D.C.is not as busy and noisy as New York, but it’s not a small city by any means. You get the best of both worlds: peace and quiet along with the company of everyone else. Plus, during spring break, cherry blossoms usually bloom as an added bonus for going.
- Daytona Beach, FL
-
If you are longing for a spring break filled with beach days and sunbathing on the sandy shores, then Daytona Beach is for you. If you’re also a fan of “Cheer,” then you probably understand the longing I feel to visit this city. From the NCA Collegiate Cheer/ Dance Championships to the Daytona 500, it’s no wonder Daytona Beach is known as “The World’s Most Famous Beach.” It’s a perfect, cheaper substitute to Miami and definitely one to consider.
So, here are a few options to get you started. But, no matter if you travel a hundred miles away or stay within the comfort of your own home, spring break is what you make of it. So, I hope you enjoy yours to the fullest!
