We’ve entered a world of seasonal flavors, bright lights and all things merry. We love Christmas because not only do we receive gifts, but it opens up a door of fun activities to do that you wouldn’t participate in any other time of the year. Being in an area like Kansas City has its advantages over the holidays with so many things to do. Here are some ways that you can get into the holiday spirit in Kansas City.
- A Christmas Carol

Take a journey with the ghosts of Christmas past, present and future. A holiday classic and favorite Kansas City tradition, the Kansas City Repertory Theatre performs A Christmas Carol annually. The Repertory Theatre is located right on UMKC campus, and students can use their IDs to get tickets at a discounted price. Shows are playing now until December 24 and are held on select nights each week.
- Festival of Lights

Hosted by Evergy, the Festival of Lights is held at Powell Gardens, turning it into a winter wonderland. You can bundle up with your friends and family and enjoy walking on the lighted outdoor path. It is a great photo op to show everyone that you’re getting into the holiday spirit. The garden lasts until December 30, and is held Wednesday through Sunday beginning at 4:10 p.m.

For all the former dancers and anyone who enjoys the ballet, the Kansas City Ballet is performing The Nutcracker at the Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts. Shows last until December 24. You don’t want to miss a great show in a beautiful venue.

Would you like the chance to see a 40-foot Christmas tree? Union Station in downtown Kansas City is covered in festive decorations. Union Station is home to the “Holiday Reflections,” a walk-through village in one of Kansas City’s most historic places. Union Station will celebrate until January 1.

Considered one of the best light displays in Kansas City, the Country Club Plaza is covered in thousands of lights, making it one of the most festive places to be. You can eat, shop and explore under the glowing luminescence. The lights display started in the 1920s, and the Plaza kicks off the holiday season with a lighting ceremony that takes place every Thanksgiving and the lights run through the middle of January. This is one of Kansas City’s traditions that you don’t want to miss out on.

This is a great place to go if you enjoy ice skating. The rink is located in the middle of Crown Center, where you are surrounded by festive lights and decorations. You can also head inside Crown Center to shop and grab food. The terrace opened at the beginning of November, and stays open through March 12. It is a great way to enjoy the holidays while also getting in some activity.

It’s not often that you could spend your holidays under the sea. The Sea of Lights is hosted by SeaLife located in Crown Center. The aquarium is decorated for the holidays, so you can enjoy the sea life and the festive lights. The display lasts until January 1.
