HC: Tell us a bit about your fraternity, Phi Sigma Pi.
AS: Phi Sigma Pi is a gender inclusive National Honors Fraternity. We are built on a tripod of three ideals: Scholarship, Leadership, and Fellowship. This tripod provides direction in our organization, our programming, and in our actions as members. Combined, the tripod guides our members to be successful contributing citizens while on campus, in the community, and well into their professional careers.
Â
HC: What do your responsibilities as President entail?
AS: As the President, I lead the weekly Chapter meetings, ensure all the rules are being followed, and make sure everything’s running smoothly.
Â
HC: What’s it like being the President?
AS: It’s definitely a lot of work, and there’s absolutely a learning curve with it. But it’s a great experience, and I wouldn’t trade it for anything! I love how supportive and patient everyone is as I (and the rest of our executive board) learn how to be the best leaders we can be.
Â
HC: So far in your Presidency, what have you learned?
AS: I’ve learned that mistakes will be made, and that’s okay–just make sure you’re honest about them and resolve the issue. Another thing I’ve learned is that you cannot make everyone happy. You need to stand by your decisions and realize that someone will always disagree with you. Â
Â
HC: Favorite Phi Sigma Pi memory so far?
AS: My favorite memory with Phi Sigma Pi so far would have to be our Formal at Bellamy Mansion. Never have I ever seen a group of such stylish and dapper individuals as at our Formal. And don’t forget, we had every person’s dream for catering…. Can you say endless Chick-Fil-A nuggets and sandwiches? I had so much fun dancing, limboing, and taking some very sharp pictures.
Â
Â
HC: What’s the best thing about being in Phi Sigma Pi?
AS: I would say the best part about being in Phi Sigma Pi is making friends with a bunch of smart and well-rounded individuals. We have geeks, athletes, artists, scholars, leaders, workers, and everything else! I’m so fortunate to have joined such a wonderful family!
Â
HC: If a student is interested in becoming a brother of Phi Sigma Pi, how should they go about getting involved?
AS: Great question! Keep an eye on your email inbox at the start of the semester. If you’re eligible, you should receive an email from our organization. We’ll also be tabling and posting flyers in all the residence halls. In the meantime, if you have any questions, check out our SeaOrg page, Twitter, and Instagram.
Â
HC: Are you involved in anything else at UNCW?
AS: I am on the club swim team. I was on the club crew team up until this semester, but I had to take a little hiatus from it to ensure my academics didn’t suffer. I do, however, intend to return to rowing this coming fall.
Â
HC: If you could supersize any animal and ride it into battle, which animal would you choose and why?
AS: I love this question (and have used it many times, too)! After much consideration, I have deemed the Spider-Ape from Spy Kids to be the best option. That or a bald eagle because well, you know, America.Â
