What’s your major?
I am double majoring in History and Political Science
Can you tell me what you are involved with on campus?
I am the Director of Multicultural Affairs, the President of the Spanish Club and the Political Action Coordinator for PRIDE.
Can you tell me what Multicultural Affairs is?
It ranges from a lot of things. It’s really about making an impact on campus in terms of what we want to do—move above tolerance and move towards acceptance of differences.
What issues do you usually face as the Director of Multicultural Affairs?
For me, I always want to do as much as I can, but my advisor always reminds me that my academics should come first. As much as I want to do everything I possibly can, I have to take my academics into consideration. [Multicultural affairs] shouldn’t be my primary focus, it’s just one of them.
Is there anything you’ve learned or gained from these leadership positions?
Leadership isn’t just a position, it’s a service. One of the things I’m learning is that it’s not abou having the title, it’s the people I work with. Every organization has a mission statement—following through with that mission statement is what makes it worthwhile. I really just want to be happy. I guess what I want from life is success—not monetary or materialistic success, it’s the people I have affected. And happiness I’ve brought into my and other’s lives.
What plans do you have after graduation?
Hopefully, law school. I can’t see myself doing anything else.
What has been the best memory at UNCW so far?
My favorite memory would probably be convocation, that’s when I met my best friend. What makes a college experience great is the relationships you make.
Can you describe yourself in three words?
I can’t. I don’t think three words can describe someone. The less you try to condense it, the less layers the person has. You have to look at the whole scope of things. So when I meet someone, I don’t think of three words. But I asked Chris, someone who works with me, he said I’m ‘selectively focused’.
How do you manage your time?
It’s really difficult. Right now, I sleep and eat whenever I can. The hardest part is putting academics first. You can forget that sometimes, when you’re doing a lot of student organizations or jobs, it can be distracting. But that’s why I’m here—academics.
