Kenneth Freyer: Aspiring Film Director

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UNCW chapter.

Name: Kenneth Lee Freyer

Hometown: Mocksville, North Carolina

Year in school: An 18 year old Junior, with 80 credits and an Associate’s Degree.

Major: Double majoring in Film and Computer Science

Kenneth Freyer is an aspiring film director, Orientation Leader at UNCW and a volunteer firefighter for the Cooleemee Fire Department. As a first year college student, he has taken part in numerous film festivals, directs numerous commercials shown in Lumina Theater and is coordinating the Reel Teal Film Festival, which is a solely student-organized film festival that takes place annually at the University of North Carolina-Wilmington and receives submissions from around the world.

HC: What is your favorite thing about being a UNCW student?

Being a part of a community of people is the best thing about being a UNCW student. Everyone is so nice and helpful. Everyone is accepting and motivational.

HC: How did you become interested in filming?

I used to watch a lot of Youtube videos, such as FreddieW and Corridor Digital, and their videos pushed me to want to become a part of film, and provide amazing entertainment to people.

HC: Any other past times besides filming?

I am an Orientation Leader. Being an orientation leader is a huge time commitment, because there is so much training, however, it is extremely fun to do. I also love to play music. I play the guitar, the banjo, the ukulele, the harmonica and the recorder. I can play some mean songs on recorder!

HC: Who’s your favorite director? Why?

My favorite director would have to be Sir Peter Jackson. You get lost in his movies. The images that he portrays just leave you with a sense of awe. I am not alone either. Think of how many people follow the Lord of the Rings, and Peter Jackson is the perfect director for Middle Earth.

HC: What’s your favorite film that you’ve made so far?

My favorite film that I have completed would be a tie between “Adrift: A First Year Experience” and “So, Time Travel.” I loved working on both of them. They were both for a contest. One was for a First Year Film Festival and the other was for a 24 Hour Video Race. The one for the 24 hour video race, “So, Time Travel”, was a film that a group of friends and I created in 24 hours. We wrote the script, searched for props, equipment, and location, filmed the scenes, wrote the music, and edited it all together, in 24 hours. I edited most of it and acted in it, which was fun because I played a rather odd character. The film is very experimental, grungy and amateur.

HC: If someone wanted to view more of your works, where online could they find them?

If you want to view some of my works, you can see some of the videos I made when I was younger on my YouTube:  http://www.youtube.com/user/VFXFreyer

I am very critical on my work, however I do post the things I like. I hope to post more videos as I grow in film and as my abilities begin to blossom more. You can view “Adrift: A First Year Experience” on this channel and I welcome critique!

HC: Are you currently working on any projects?

I am actually currently directing a few commercials that play in our movie theater on campus, Lumina Theatre, and commercials for other organizations on campus for some events that they are doing. I am also on a committee for an international film festival, in which I am helping coordinate and helping with marketing. We have received over 30 submissions from around the world so far. It is called “Reel Teal Film Festival”, and you can check out its Facebook Page with all the details at www.facebook.com/reelteal and we are also fundraising so feel free to donate at http://igg.me/at/reelteal2014/x/5805915

There are a lot of really cool prizes involved.

HC: Anything else you’d like to add?

Students at any University, I am talking to you! Get involved sooner than later. I have only been at UNCW for a semester now, and I feel like every day I spend here is so fulfilling. I am apart of so many clubs and organizations, and I love it! I feel like I am a part of a huge family, and nothing feels warmer than that!
