A Single Girl’s Guide to Valentine’s Day

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UNCW chapter.

Roses are red, Violets are blue, Cupid is stupid, so you just do YOU.

Valentine’s day has always been such a cliché. All you see is red roses, chocolate, huge teddy bears and loving couples acting as if they’re the only two people in the world. News flash! Some of us are single and hate the dreaded February 14th – aka Single Awareness Day. So, what’s a girl to do when she can’t even walk into Walmart without feeling like cupid has already made his mark there. Here are a few simple things you can do to make sure your Valentine’s day is enjoyable too.

  • Make it about YOU! – What’s better than a night where you get to pamper yourself! Paint your nails, take a bath or read a book, whatever you want to do. Remember that show you’ve been meaning to catch up on Netflix? Well, there has never been a better time to binge watch it until now! Valentine’s Day is all about love so take a little bit of time and show yourself some.
  • Movie Night – Break out the popcorn and ice cream with all the toppings, tonight is movie night! Whether its by yourself or with all of your girlfriends, a movie night is the perfect fix for the Valentine’s Day blues. There are tons of great movies on Netflix like; I Love You Man, Revenge of the Bridesmaids, Definitely Maybe, and How to Lose a Guy in 10 days. Or let your inner kid live and re-watch those childhood favorites (plus some more recent ones); Boss Baby, High School Musical (and High School Musical 2), Ella Enchanted and Hoodwinked.
  •  Gal-entine’s Day – One of the best things to do on Valentine’s Day is surround yourself with people who make you laugh. So, grab your besties and plan for a night out! Get glammed up, wear your favorite outfit and have a night out on the town. If that’s not your scene there’s nothing wrong with a night in! Baking cookies, doing face masks, and having a spa night would be the perfect way to relax and unwind.
  • Retail Therapy – Whether it’s at the mall or online, my favorite way to spend the day is SHOPPING! I mean a little shopping never hurt anyone, right? Plus, nothing makes you feel better than a new pair of shoes or a cute shirt! Splurge a little and treat yourself.

The most important thing to remember is that you don’t need a guy to have a good Valentine’s Day. Surround yourself with friends that make you laugh or spend the day taking some much needed time for yourself. Remember that the best day comes after Valentine’s Day, February 15th, when ALL chocolate is 50% off!!
