Tate Taylor is not your typical fraternity President or your average resident assistant; in fact, he is both. Â Tate is a 21-year-old senior at UNCW, majoring in Business Management and Leadership. Tate applied only to UNCW because of his love for the city of Wilmington and his desire to carry on the Seahawk legacy in his family because both his brother and sister went here.
Tate is the President of the Delta Sigma Phi chapter at UNCW and a Resident Assistant (RA) for the Seahawk Crossing. So much campus involvement for one person!  According to Tate, the hardest part about being so involved is time management. He says, “It’s hard to find free time, I’ve never had to attend so many meetings in my life!” Even with all of his responsibilities, Tate still focuses on his studies and is the best student that he can be. He doesn’t let anything get in the way of his academics.  Of course he has had to pull plenty of all-nighters, but hey, it’s college.
Throughout his journey here at UNCW, being in a fraternity and working as an RA has helped him become a better person. Both positions have required him to connect with people, whether it is his fraternity brothers or his residents. Good thing for us, he loves meeting new people and both of these positions have allowed him to become more sociable. How does one juggle their time doing all of this? Tate’s short answer was he doesn’t… but he finally gave in and said: he has to sacrifice a lot. Luckily, he has a great support system of friends who will help him whenever he needs it. He has learned how crucial it is to delegate tasks and to not spread himself out too thin.
Tate encourages students to be in multiple organizations, saying, “don’t hesitate to do it!  I think everyone should try to get the most out of the college experience. The worst that can happen is you learn that something may not be a good fit for you. College is a time of exploring new opportunities.” A quote that Tate lives by is, “You miss 100% of the shots that you don’t take.”
It has to be hard to know how to balance being a fraternity brother and also an authority figure on residential halls. Tate tries his best to keep it unbiased by establishing a level of respect with the residents and his brothers. One semester he had four of his fraternity brothers living where he was an RA. He made sure to stop and explain to everyone that he was not a mall cop, but he also wanted to promote an atmosphere of education for his residents, which exemplifies his leadership skills and will take him far in his Leadership major.
Tate has always wanted to become Batman, but unfortunately for him, UNCW does not offer that degree. Instead, when he graduates he wants to get his MBA. Tate is thankful for the opportunities that his fraternity has brought him to, the experiences he has had as the President, and the leadership practices of being an RA. Tate says both organizations have been great opportunities when it comes to building relationships that he can keep for the rest of his life. He is proud to be a part of an organization that will help build future leaders like himself. So who knows where we might see Tate in the future, but wherever it is, it will be somewhere that allows him to lead and form great relationships.
