As we start classes again and get back into the college routine, it is important to make time for our health and wellbeing in addition to academics. From workouts to reading, here are a few thing you can incorporate into your day to step into your best self this semester.

Walking

As simple as it may sound, getting your steps in throughout the day is not only great exercise, but it has been found to boost mood and lower rates of depression. If the weather is nice, then go for a stroll outside, and if it is too cold or raining, hit the treadmill and listen to a podcast or playlist. Walking helps you sleep better, it aids in digestion, and it helps your mental health.

Reading

In todays society it is so normal to sit and scroll on our phones, so why not normalize reading? Reading is great because you can learn something interesting, or get lost in a new world all while you are relaxing. It is also a great way to wind down at night and is a good alternative to scrolling socials. I am currently reading The Housemaid by Freida McFadden, but find something that is interesting to you and see where it takes you.

Meditating

Living in our fast paced culture, sometimes it can feel like you never have a minute to relax, and that is where meditation comes in. Meditation does not have to be complicated. It can be as simple as sitting in silence and focusing on your breathing. Just a few minutes a day is enough to regulate your nervous system and regroup. I used to meditate every day, and it really helped to manage stress throughout the day, so I want to make it a priority again. Just five minutes a day can make a huge difference. If silence is not for you, I totally get it. Try a guided meditation video on YouTube and see what you think.

These are just a few small things you can add to your routine that can have a big impact on your overall wellbeing. By doing these things you can prioritize your own health while being able to better show up in your day to day life.
