These are some tips I have found helpful for becoming a healthier, happier and overall more productive student in college.

Sleep

Although the stereotype for college students is to stay up all night and practically live off caffeine, this doesn’t have to be your lifestyle. Sleep is extremely important for both your physical and mental health. Allow yourself time during the day for studying and schoolwork, so it doesn’t need to be done when nighttime rolls around. Create a bedtime routine for yourself that allows you to settle down and relax. Some of my favorite things to do before bed are make some tea, read, watch a movie or take a bath. Do things that relax your mind and body instead of things that stimulate your brain, it will help you fall asleep easier and encourage peaceful sleep!

Exercise

If exercising is something you dread, you haven’t found the right activity for yourself. Listen to your body and don’t push yourself too hard. Also, don’t be afraid to try new workouts, especially if your college is offering fitness classes for free. Some of my favorite workouts to do on campus are taking a walk in College Woods, attending Zumba classes, lifting weights at the gym, participating in cycling classes and doing yoga. Do something to move your body and it will improve your mood drastically!

Balance your alone time and social time

It can be hard to find alone time when you are living with roommates. Although hanging out with friends can be lots of fun, you need to learn how to enjoy time by yourself. It’s important to find happiness within yourself instead of relying on others for entertainment. Life is about doing what you want to do and following your own passions, rather than constantly doing what your friends want to do! Some things I enjoy doing by myself are going for walks, journaling, reading, baking and exploring new cafes. Going places alone may be intimidating at first, but the more you do it, the easier it will get!

Nourish yourself

Food is what gives us energy throughout the day. I’ve noticed that when I eat three meals a day my energy levels are significantly higher. I know eating can be a hassle especially when you don’t have a kitchen in your dorm room, but food is essential to increasing productivity. Eat food that nourishes your body and try to limit your sugar intake, as it can make you tired. Don’t forget to drink plenty of water throughout the day as well!

Self-care

Self-care can reduce anxiety and increase happiness. You need to treat yourself just as well as you would another person. Self-care will help you grow your sense of self-worth and make you more confident! Some of my favorite things to do for a self-care night are paint my nails, do a face mask, take a bath, try a new sugar scrub, journal, meditate and take a break from social media. A self-care night is perfect for when you are feeling overwhelmed or just need some alone time!
