With summer on the way a lot of us are on the hunt for new swimwear. It is not uncommon for one to find themself looking for bikinis on places like Shein, Romwe, or other fast fashion sites. They are cheap, trendy, and allow us to stock up on multiple suits for the new season. With shopping this way what some people fail to realize is how harmful it is to invest in these fast fashion corporations.
Overproduction of clothing is one of the largest pollutants and millions of these pieces end up in landfills each year. Within these fast fashion clothing items are a lot of toxins and harmful dyes that are extremely damaging to the environment. On top of the environmental damage, the way these clothing items are produced is extremely unethical. The working conditions in the sweatshops that produce these fast fashion garments are inhumane. Most consumers do not realize just how large of a role they play in these issues when they are buying from these brands.
This is why I encourage that for the 2022 summer you consider buying sustainable swimwear. Many people are turned off of sustainable swimwear because of how expensive it can be, which I totally understand. This is why I have decided to find some affordable sustainable swimwear options to suggest. Still, while not as inexpensive as places like Shein, these options are providing you quality pieces that will last summers to come. Here are four great shops I recommend to check out with some really great sustainable options!
TAI Swim
Tai Swim is so cute! I came across this brand on TikTok recently (@taiswim.co) and fell in love with so many of their pieces. All their swimsuits are made from plastic bottles with plant based dyes and non-toxic fabrics. Their swimsuit designs are made with the intent to use all fabric and not let scraps go to waste. This is why each and every bikini collection is unique from one another, which I think is a really cool element of the brand. From item tags all the way to shipping materials they make environmentally friendly efforts. They are also very open about their relationship with the product manufactures sharing that they are a family owned company from Indonesia consisting of 20 middle aged adults. The creator, Tai, really supports the sustainable and environmentally conscious lifestyle and you can definitely see that through this brand.
Price Range– Tops starting at $51.98 and bottoms starting at $49.88
DO GOOD swimwear & Surf club
Do Good Swimwear is a small, minority, women owned brand. Do Good Swimwear is extremely affordable! They have great prices and so many great reasons to buy from them. They have an incredible origin story as they came up with the idea for Do Good Swimwear while picking up waste on the beach. They decided to take that ocean waste, recycle it, and create swimwear out of it. They produce their swimwear in small batches to prevent waste and use timeless cuts and designs all to limit their environmental footprint. They are a body inclusive brand and want to create swimwear that everyone feels celebrated in. Check them out!
Price Range- Tops starting at $38, bottoms at $38, and one pieces at $36
SUMMERSALT
Summersalt is another brand I really like. They use recycled materials for both their swimwear and packaging. One of the brands core values is body inclusivity and with their wide range of styles you can see that. They have so many diverse swimwear options and I think everyone could find something they like. Functionality and comfort are a priority in their designs so if that’s something you are looking for in swimwear I recommend.
Price Range-Tops starting at $50, bottoms at $45, and one pieces at $95
Out of the blue Swim
Out Of The Blue Swim is a really awesome brand! They have a wide range of cool patterns and styles. I found their styles to be especially unique and flattering to all body types. Out Of The Blue Swim is very inclusive with sizes from XXS-XXXXXL. Their bathing suits are made from mostly recycled nylon and polyester and they value ethical manufacturing. Creator Makena says, “My goal is to create environmentally friendly products that make you feel both comfortable and confident”. This can definitely be seen when looking at her brand as a whole and I think you all should check it out! This brand is a bit pricey compared to the other brands on this list, but I still wanted to mention it because I think it has some really great swimsuits that would be well worth it if you were considering investing in some nice unique and long lasting pieces.
Price Range– Tops starting at $75, bottoms starting at $85, and one pieces starting at $110
