Greg Meehan ’12

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UNH chapter.

While most of us are gearing up for the big UMASS UNH game at Gillette, Greg Meehan, international finance student of WSBE, is packing his bags to go to a meeting in Memphis, TE with the CEO of his national fraternity, Pi Kappa Alpha. This is only one of six weekends that Greg will be leaving campus his senior year to travel across the country in a similar fashion. While serving as a sophomore President of his fraternity at UNH, he helped win his chapter the Robert Adger Smythe award for the first time since 1985, which is granted to the top 5% of Pike chapters in the entire country.

Greg was recently elected to be Vice President of the entire National Fraternity, working directly with the CEO among other Executive officers. For HC readers who do not know how this translates outside of Greek life, this is comparable to being the Vice President of a nation-wide company.

After talking with Greg about his position for the next year, he answered modestly and honestly as he discussed this awesome opportunity!

Greg was considered for this position by meeting certain national qualifications. One was to attend a minimal of five national conferences. In the past three years he traveled to two conferences in Philadelphia, two in Memphis, two in Boston, and one in Austin, each to discuss various topics in ways to better the chapter. Through these conferences Greg started to network with the Pike staff and alumni and became well known within the national fraternity. In addition, he participated in the “True Pike Challenge” a 7 day outdoor survival course in Boulder, Utah. Lastly, Greg was fully qualified due to wide spread involvement in the Gamma Mu chapter at the University of New Hampshire as well as additional student organizations.

What comes with this new position are obligations that one would expect from a full time job. He will work on the Supreme Council to focus on the strategic plan and vision of the national fraternity over the long term.
As the Undergraduate Vice President Greg also serves as a voting member on the governing body of the national fraternity as well as a liaison to the fraternity’s education board. He basically gets to work directly with the CEO’s in making decisions regarding the future for the fraternity at a national level.

Regarding his future commitment, Greg stated ,”I am most excited to interact with the other board members. There are only two undergraduates on the board with the other members being alumnus members of the fraternity. Many of them are CEO’s and VP’s of various corporations around the country, thus it will be an honor to interact with these highly regarded Pike Alum”.

After his trip to Memphis, Greg will also travel to New Jersey, California, Colorado and Michigan to attend various conferences and Supreme Council meetings. Although Greg is unsure of what he wants to do after graduation in May 2012, he anticipates that the meetings will be highly structured and fast paced. He hopes to use this job as a chance to learn specific knowledge and skills that will help him in the professional business field, for whatever comes next.
