The holidays are right around the corner! Sadly, as many college students know, with the holidays brings final exams and projects before the end of the semester. As a junior in college, I struggled for a really long time to find the right ways to de-stress and take care of my mental and physical health during this time. Here are several tips and tricks I use every year to make this time of year a bit less daunting!
The first tip is something I try to keep up with all year round but especially once the weather gets colder and homework starts getting crazier– moving your body in some way you enjoy every day. It doesn’t have to be anything crazy, just a walk in the morning or a jog on the treadmill between classes can make you feel so refreshed and gives your brain a natural break from thinking too hard! One of my favorite places to start off the day is the neighborhoods near my dorm! I get up and go for a jog to ground myself before the day ahead, and the fresh air combined with the dopamine always puts me in a good mood! It may seem hard at first, but your mind and body will thank you for that little pick-me-up throughout the day.
My second tip is utilizing study groups and TA study sessions for any exams you may have. Study sessions are not only a great way to prepare yourself and go over any tough spots in the material but also a way to connect with your classmates! Everyone is in the same boat and seeing that you aren’t alone can be so validating. Remember, a lot of college students are in the same boat as you this time of year!
Lastly, I recommend making studying separate from your bed or living space. Studying in my room is something I typically find myself doing, especially in my cozy bed. It can be really hard to separate wind-down time from grind-time if your bed is your go-to place to work! I recommend going to the library on campus or maybe to one of the lounges in your building if they have any. This always makes me feel better once I do get into bed because I know I don’t have to worry or think about homework for the rest of the night!
These tips among so many more are little things I do to make sure I maintain self-care and a healthy mindset during finals season! These are great stepping stones to finding what self-care works for you during crunch time, whether it be crafting, hanging with friends, exercising, or just being there for yourself.
