We’re at that point in the semester where burnout is real. Between midterms, jobs, and social outings all fighting for our time, it can be easy to forget about taking care of yourself and your well-being. Here are some things that I try to incorporate into my week when I’m feeling stressed.
Incorporate Movement
Often times, the first thing to get removed from my schedule when I’m busy is my workout. While it seems pointless when you have so many things to do, it’s so important for your mental health. Going to the gym can also help take your mind off school and work for a little bit which can be helpful. If you’re especially short on time, try to fit in a quick 20-30 minute workout, or even a quick walk around campus.
Take Intentional Breaks
You can’t work 24/7, so it’s important to take time in between tasks to relax and take your mind off things. This could look like going to eat a meal with friends, or having a snack and listening to music. I find going for a walk and listening to a podcast to be very calming and it is usually just what I need this time of year.
Connect with friends and family
It can be easy to get caught up in the grind and forget to reach out to friends and family, but usually, those are the people who can help keep you grounded. I like to Facetime my family and see what’s going on at home. This usually helps to put things in perspective and realize that all of this stress and schoolwork is temporary. You could also meet up with a friend to study; this way you can catch up while also getting work done.
Change your perspective
While this time of year can be very demanding, I always find it helpful to put things in perspective. Try to change the narrative from “I have to study” to “I get to study.” While this may sound silly, it is important to remember that we are so fortunate to be able to go to college to pursue a degree. Also, be sure to remember that everything is temporary. Despite the tough exams, and seemingly endless assignments, the semester will be over before we know it, so try to find ways to enjoy your life in between. Take everything one day at a time and do your best to take care of yourself! We’ll get through it together, and I hope you find some of these tips helpful!
