When I first heard about The Hunger Games, I was confused as to why so many people wanted to read about teenagers who were forced to kill each other. After staying up until 2 a.m. to finish the book in one evening, I admit The Hunger Games is so much more than a war story.
Suzanne Collins did an unbelievable job at portraying the story she has created. In a futuristic North America that was once torn apart by war, thirteen districts arose. The most powerful area, located in the Rocky Mountains, is known as the supremely powerful Capitol, which hosts the Hunger Games. The Hunger Games occur in a pre-created arena where a male and female tribute, ages twelve to eighteen, from districts one to twelve are forced to use weapons and hand to hand combat to kill one another. The entire Hunger Games are televised live to the twelve districts, and the only person that survives the Hunger Games becomes the winner, and an enormous celebrity.
(Meet the district Tributes!)
If you haven’t read the book, stop reading now and go get it! After finishing only the first book, I’m left with a lingering thought. I have a suspicion that Katniss, the books narrator, and Gale will become an item in the future, but why doesn’t she want Peeta? If a cute boy confessed his love for me on live television and saved my life from a Career Tribute, I’d be sold. Although, now that I’ll be associating Gale with Liam Hemsworth while reading the next two books, my mind might wander to Gale too.Â
I highly recommend The Hunger Games. You won’t regret reading about the fate of Katniss Everdeen, the narrator of the book. The movie premiers this Friday, March 23rd, at midnight, and I literally can’t wait to see it.
(Gale is SO hot, but your campus correspondents are still #teamPeeta)Â
