The fashion world was very vocal Monday night following the biggest night for fashion in the year: the Met Gala. If you don’t already know, the Met Gala is an annual fundraising event that benefits the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute. One of the things that makes this even so appealing (in my opinion) is the fact that it is a themed event. This year’s theme was America: A Lexicon of Fashion, which led to a lot of very interesting looks from the celebrities in attendance. The fashion world has shared its opinion on the most memorable outfits and now, as someone who knows little to nothing about fashion, I am going to share mine.
- Kim Kardashian
I feel like this all-black look that Kim K showed up in on Monday night is extremely overrated. Maybe it would have been more interesting if she and Kanye hadn’t done similar things while promoting Donda. I think my biggest issue with this outfit is that it seems so inspired by Kanye. I thought they were getting divorced?! Why does Kim always seem to do the absolute most for Kanye when he does little to nothing for her. He didn’t even go to the event! I think that it’s just weird that her life is still so strongly influenced by him but not vis-versa.
- Lil Nas X
I LOVE HIM AND I LOVE IT. An absolute King. I love the gold, I love the three fits, I love the jumpsuit. That’s it, that’s all I have to say. 10/10.
- Jennifer Lopez
In my humble opinion, I think JLo was the clear winner of the Met. Nothing says America like some cowboys (although who knows, maybe I just think that because I have a thing for cowboys). The hat, the leather, the necklaces, she is perfecting and her outfit is perfection. The one and only thing that could have made this look better would be if she were wearing cowboy boots.
- Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez
Without a doubt the most controversial look of the night. Nothing has been more frustrating these past few days than seeing so many uneducated people come at AOC for attending the gala and wearing that dress. So one more time for the people in the back: REPRESENTATIVES OF NEW YORK CITY ARE INVITED TO ATTEND BECAUSE THEY ARE THERE TO OVERSEE THE CULTURAL INSTITUTION. SHE DID NOT PAY TO ATTEND, NOR DID ANY OF THE OTHER REPS THAT WERE THERE. SHE BORROWED THE DRESS. Thank you for listening to my TED talk.
- Kendall Jenner
Unpopular opinion: as much as I loved the dress itself, I do not think Kendall won the Met Gala. Don’t get me wrong the dress is absolutely gorgeous, I just don’t think it fit the theme as well as so many of the other looks did. It felt more like she was trying to make up for flopping the heavenly bodies theme from the 2018 Met Gala.
- Anna Wintour / Irina Shayk / Lili Reinhart / Nikkie de Jager
I have the same issue with all of these looks so they are getting clumped together. STOP TRYING TO COPY TAYLOR SWIFT. Taylor Swift absolutely killed her flowered dress at the Grammy’s earlier this year, and it felt like all of these looks were trying to imitate the look. And they didn’t even come close. While that’s a big enough issue in and of itself for me, I also have a bone to pick with the fact that I don’t think it really applies to the theme at all, American’s aren’t especially known for being kind to nature.
- Justin and Hailey Bieber
Beautiful people. Couldn’t have picked more boring outfits even if they tried. Black tux and black dress at a red carpet event. Groundbreaking.
- Gabrielle Union
If JLo didn’t win the Met Gala, then Gabrielle Union did. I love how heavily inspired it is by modern architecture and how beautifully it moved while she walked. It was so structured while being so fluid, I just feel like it was a really special and unique look.
- Megan Fox
I would first like to start by saying the Megan Fox is the hottest woman in the world, and the competition is not even close. Second, I would like to say that her red dress is the hottest piece of clothing ever made. She absolutely killed that dress, I don’t even have the words to describe it. I also don’t know if this was intentional, but it looked like it was matching to what her boyfriend, Machine Gun Kelly, wore at the VMAs the night before and if that’s on purpose then that’s super cute of them.
- Addison Rae
BOOORIIIING. She’s so young and cool (I feel like a 50-year-old saying that but it’s true) she could have worn such a cooler, sexier dress. I also just don’t understand why she wore Kourtney Kardashian’s old dress. I get that they’re friends and everything, but it feels like she’s trying to put herself in Kourtney’s shadow rather than trying to get out of it. She’s already so famous by herself there’s no way she couldn’t have gotten a better dress.
- Yara Shaidi
I love the Gatsby vibe from this dress! I’m surprised that more people didn’t try to go for the roaring 20’s style, especially since it’s been a full century since then. A perfect dress for the theme without it screaming in your face that it’s American. The dress is just so cool and looks so good on her, this is a look that definitely should have been talked about more.
- Kim Petras
Last but not least (actually, maybe least), this absolute monstrosity of a dress. As much as I am repulsed by this dress, I think it’s kind of a perfect visual of American in a sadly-not-so-ironic kind of way. Obnoxious horse girls and a sh*t show. That’s all I have to say.
Honorable mentions for other looks I loved (specifically for the theme! I’m not saying other dresses weren’t nice but come on guys, it’s a themed event at least try)
