“Raise your word, not your voice. It is rain that grows flowers, not thunder.” Rumi
Words have a strong impact on all of us. I bet we can all recall something that someone has said about us, to define us, categorize, or describe us, word for word. They leave an everlasting mark whether we like it or not. I’ve been called clingy, dramatic, oblivious, and more. These words hit hard. I remember when, why, and every person who has ever described me that way. But I’ve also been called brave, strong, kind, independent, and unique. These are the kinds of words that should have a lasting impact. Those terrible and harsh words should not be what defines you. Only you can define who you are and no one should have a negative perspective on themselves. The only reason you would is because you let someone have that ability. You know yourself better than anyone else, not the other way around.
It is said that the most powerful words you can say or think are “I am”. “I am” is the start of how you categorize yourself. It’s the start of how you meaningfully describe yourself. Using the phrase “I am” is how you truly see yourself and how the people around you will see you. I’ve realized that we don’t need reassurance and proof to define who we are. I am the only one who truly knows the real me. My words are all that matter to me. So the next time someone uses words to belittle you and knock you down just remember…..
“I am brave”, not scared. YOU are brave, NOT scared. Being brave is defined as having courage; the courage to face anything that gets in your way. Bravery is not limited to those who take a risk. Bravery is a quality we all possess some way or another, you just have to believe “I’m brave”. I am brave for having a voice. I’m brave for taking the road less traveled. You are brave because______.
“I am strong”, not weak. YOU are strong, not weak. That does not mean physically strong. Trust me. I used to hide when I was in pain, hurt, and upset because that’s what I thought made me strong. Pushing it away was what I thought made people tough. It’s not. I was just avoiding things that were difficult and hard to deal with. I’m strong for accepting failure. I’m strong for understanding that everything happens for a reason. You are strong because_____.
The power of spoken words can be used for good and also as a weapon. Stop and remember that words have consequences. You cannot take back something that you said. Your choice in words is very important. They can change someone. Have you ever looked in the mirror and wished you were someone else? Do you remember how you felt? Do you want to be the reason someone feels that way? One word has the power to shape someone’s life. The only words out of our mouths should be ones of encouragement and empowerment.
The power that words possess can leave a lasting impact on someone. Words are how we are remembered. The words we are remembered by should be ones we are proud of. You are the only one who has the power to define who you and make your mark on the world. It’s kinda like we have superpowers. Why waste your power tearing down others or maybe even yourself. Is that really how you want to be remembered? The choice is yours.
