New Hampshire is consistently ranked in the top 3 for safest states, and UNH doesn’t have a high crime rate, but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t take precautions to staying safe! So in case you are ever in a situation where you might need to protect yourself, here is what you should learn beforehand!
Â
Â
1. Always tell someone where you are going and text or call them when you arrive at your destination.
Â
2. Walk with a friend, especially at night. If you feel comfortable enough, stay the night and walk home in the morning (If you have an awesome roommate, they will meet you with a change of clothes).
Â
Â
3. Carry pepper spray and/or a whistle with you. Drawing attention to yourself will deter the attacker!
Â
Â
4. Carrying your keys in your hand is a good tool too, as they can be used for defense if needed.
Â
5. Walk on well lit paths. Attackers are less likely to come after you if you will be able to see them. UNH has over 100 blue safety lights all around campus, make sure you can always see one. If you are attacked run to the nearest one, press the button and then run to the next one if you are being followed. Police will respond immediately.
Â
Â
6. UNH Police offer a 24/7 safety escort service. Don’t hesitate to call them if you feel uncomfortable walking home, day or night! 603-862-1427 or 2-1427 if you’re calling from a campus phone.
Â
Â
7. When walking alone at night, ditch the music and be aware of your surroundings! Attackers will look for people who are unsuspecting.
Â
8. If you think you are being followed, cross the street and increase your pace. If the person continues to follow – call 911.Â
Â
9. UNH Police offer many classes to protect yourself against attacks like assault and rape. For information about times and dates call 603-862-1427!
Â
Â
10. Last but not least, know your alcohol limit! Even one drink makes you lose a percentage of your senses!Â
