I’ve never been one for horror and gore. I went to a haunted house one time in 7th grade and couldn’t sleep for approximately 2 weeks. But, I’m still a huge nerd for Halloween. So, for people like me, I curated a list of festive, but feel-good films. These movies are perfect for lighting a pumpkin candle, curling up in a blanket, and baking some goodies on a cool fall night. Let me put my film critic hat on and give you a little preview of each of my fall favorites in case you *shudder* haven’t already seen them.
- The Addams Family
An oldie but a goodie. This one is for sure a Halloween staple. The Addams Family lead a taboo lifestyle, loving all things spooky. Follow up with the sequel, Addams Family Values.
- Twitches
Iconic. That’s all I can say. Early 2000s DCOM, Mowry sisters, magical, mystical, must watch for the fall season.
- Hocus Pocus
Based in our very own New England, Hocus Pocus follows the story of the Sanderson sisters and their journey to becoming immortal. Bette Midler, Sarah Jessica Parker, and Kathy Najimy are hilarious and perfect in this Halloween classic.
- The Nightmare Before Christmas
The lifelong debate: Is this a Christmas movie or a Halloween movie? I’m not one to choose, so I enjoy it for both holidays.
- Matilda
As someone who is going into education, I have always aspired to be a Miss Honey type. But, I digress. Matilda offers a nostalgic and magical take on the Roald Dahl novel. This is a year-round type of movie, but the magical aspect makes it a perfect watch for the spooky season.
If anyone needs me, I’ll be deep in binge-watching land.
