Tips on Nailing a Job Interview

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UNH chapter.

Job interviews can be nerve-racking, but with a little preparation and confidence, you can ace it like a pro! Here are some casual tips to help you make a great first impression.

Dress to Impress but Stay True to Yourself While it’s essential to dress professionally, remember to showcase your personality through your attire. Maybe wear an outfit that aligns with the company culture and makes you feel comfortable and confident. After all, being yourself is the key to a successful interview.

Research is KEY Take the time to learn about the company’s background, values and recent achievements. Showing your knowledge about the organization demonstrates your genuine interest and enthusiasm. It also helps you think of thoughtful questions that showcase your engagement during the interview.

Practice Makes Perfect Don’t underestimate the power of practicing your responses to common interview questions. Doing some research online will give you examples of common interview questions.  Grab a friend or family member and practice mock interviews. This exercise not only boosts your confidence but also helps you refine your answers and presentation style.

Highlight Your Strengths Be ready to talk about your skills, experiences and accomplishments. Think of specific examples that demonstrate how you’ve excelled in previous roles or projects. By highlighting your strengths and accomplishments, you’ll leave a lasting impression on the interviewer.

Connect With Your Interviewer Remember, interviews are not just about showcasing your qualifications; they’re also an opportunity to build a connection. Take the time to actively listen, engage in meaningful conversations and ask follow-up questions. Building rapport with the interviewer can make a significant impact on their overall impression of you. Interviewers feel most comfortable when you mirror their body language. Mirroring does not mean to imitate!

Embrace the Power of Body Language Non-verbal communication plays a crucial role in interviews. Maintain good eye contact, sit up straight and offer a firm handshake (if in person). Smile, be attentive and use confident gestures to show your enthusiasm and interest.

Be Authentic The best advice for any interview is to be yourself! Authenticity shines through and helps you establish a genuine connection with the interviewer. Don’t try to be someone you’re not. Instead, let your true self shine and let your qualifications and personality speak for themselves.

Follow Up with a Thank You Note After the interview, send a thoughtful thank you note or email to express your appreciation for the opportunity to interview. This gesture not only shows your professionalism but also keeps you fresh in the interviewer’s mind. Even if you don’t get the job you interviewed for, they can keep you in mind for open positions in the future.

Remember, a successful interview is a combination of preparation, confidence and being true to yourself. So go ahead, rock that interview and secure that job you’ve been dreaming of. Good luck, you’ve got this!
