With the fall coming, it sometimes can be a rough adjustment going from the beautiful summer weather to the cold and dry season where all the leaves are dying, and the sun is setting earlier. However, there is beauty in fall and the transition into winter. Here are the top five movies that help me fight off seasonal depression and start to welcome the change.

  1. Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban

Harry Potter takes place on a campus with a similar vibe to college. Although at college we do not practice witchcraft and wizardry, the representation of studying and friendships at a sleep away school is directly correlated to our everyday lives. This movie in the lineup specifically highlights a lot of walking through forests with falling leaves, drinking warm drinks, and wearing layers in fashionable ways. Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban is a timeless must watch for the fall and winter of 2024.

2. Thanksgiving

For all the horror lovers out there who can stomach blood, Thanksgiving is a great film to welcome in the cold weather. With multiple plot twists and the age of the people in the movie, Thanksgiving is a total edge-of-your-seat film that relates to college age kids based directly off of being so close to high school (the age of the characters). This movie also has great fashion and in a twisted way makes you excited for Halloween, even though it takes place during a completely different holiday.

3. Halloweentown

Halloweentown is a classic fall movie that says it all in the title. If you can get past the fact that the CGI is not as up to date as other movies, it truly brings a feeling of comfort and nostalgia. It also gives great inspiration for Halloween costumes, as the characters in the movie are not only supernatural, but also decked out in ways college students would be able to easily recreate.

4. The Nightmare Before Christmas

The Nightmare Before Christmas is such a timeless film that ties together both the excitement of Halloween and the comfort of Christmas. When in between the seasons, it is the perfect film to watch on a cold, windy day with a glass of hot chocolate in hand.

5. Coraline

The last movie on my list is Coraline. Coraline is a classic fall and Halloween movie. It brings just enough amount of wonder and spookiness together, something not a lot of films have done. It makes you question things as an adult, that you may not have caught the first time around. The amount of conspiracy videos out there is astonishing. One thing to remember when watching Coraline is that everything has a purpose… everything.

Any of these movies would be great to help adjust to the cold weather. Leaving behind summer can be tough, so I have found the best way is to go into fall with excitement. Enjoy the movies!
