This Is Us is back which means we’re all in the feels right now. Last night, “Nine Bucks” was everything I had hoped for in a season premiere. We got to learn more about how Jack and Rebecca really met. Of course we knew that he saw her singing that one night after the super bowl but we thought the rest was history. Well, we were wrong. Their date was awful. I mean, it wouldn’t have been that bad but Rebecca was lowkey rude and bratty. What she doesn’t know is that Jack only had nine dollars with him at the beginning of the night. He spends seven of it on her ticket inside the carnival, her candy apple and a hot chocolate. At the end of the date, it starts to rain. She sees that they’re selling umbrellas for two dollars and asks Jack to buy her one, not knowing that if he bought her one he would have no more money which means no carnival games. He doesn’t buy the umbrella and they awkwardly stand out of the rain until she decides she wants to go home.
On the car ride home, Jack explains the money situation and apologizes. He starts to talk more about the war and open up to Rebecca which is so cute. Finally they kiss and everything is back on track. Until, Jack drives to her house to give her flowers, only to see her kissing another man holding flowers. For some reason, I started to panic and forgot that they end up together with three kids. I guess I’ll have to hate someone other than Miguel…
This episode really dives into Deja and Randall’s relationship which I love. On his birthday, Randall plans to ask Deja if she would like to become a Pearson. He drives an hour, just to show Deja where he met his biological father two years ago that day. Instead of listening, she gets mad and tells Randall that they are not the same and asks to be taken home.
When they get home, she sneaks out while everyone is preparing for Randall, Kate and Kevin’s birthday party. (Which Kate never goes to?) Of course everyone thinks Deja is running away again but it shows her going to the store to see her biological dad, who she never really knew. She asks him for one thing but of course we aren’t told what that one thing is. When she returns home, she tells Randall she snuck out. Before he can yell at her, she pulls out a box with a bow on it, clearly a birthday gift for Randall.Later that night, Randall opens his gift from Deja at the dinner table. He pulls out a new pair of Nike running sneakers which is such a great gift. Deja says that she has connections and then tells Randall that they can sign the adoption papers. I’m not crying, you’re crying.
Of course, we can’t forget about Kate and Toby. In this episode, we learn that it’s too risky for Kate to have a child because of her weight. The doctor tells her that she can’t help her, which leaves Kate and Toby very upset. However, later on we find out that Toby was never comfortable with this procedure anyways. After all, there is only a 10% success rate. After leaving the doctor’s appointment, Kate goes to a birthday brunch thrown by her friends where they literally bring out a carrot cake. She starts crying, saying she wished for a baby, but that it will never come true. Later on, Kate gets a call from the doctor asking her to come back in in a couple of hours. When they come back in, the doctor says that she can treat Kate and apologizes for earlier. Toby is obviously hesitant, but Kate doesn’t care. When they get home, we see Toby dump his antidepressant pills down the toilet.
The episode ends with a flash forward, obviously leaving us with so many questions. We see a very old Randall and Tess, in some sort of building, going to see someone. Tess says she isn’t ready to see whoever it is. Then Randall calls Toby, who is lying in bed alone, without his wedding ring on. Randall tells Toby that he should come with them, but Toby says he doesn’t think she would want him there. Still no clue what is going on.
I guess we will have to wait to see what happens! I’m just so happy that the Pearson’s are back. <3
