Fashion Trends 2011

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UNI chapter.

We may be well into the 2000s, but when it comes to Spring 2011 trends, designers are looking to the past for their muse. This year it is all about the “blast from the past,” with mod inspired dresses, wide leg pants, Bohemian inspired tassel details, crochet hems, macramé embellishments, 80s punk jackets, studded belts, and heavy motorcycle boots.

The “mod” look was featured repeatedly on the runways of the Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week in NYC. Short dresses in bright colors and bead embellishments, sleek pants, and high teased hair were retro-inspired looks many designers incorporated into their Spring lines.

The 70s Bohemian vibe has been around for quite some time now, but this Spring, is it back on embellishment steroids. You will see tassels, lace, crochet, and beaded embellishments make their way onto many Spring 2011 tresses. This trend doesn’t stop there— wide leg pants, wooden clogs, and retro inspired floral prints are back and ready for Spring 2011.

A new trend that has evolved from the “motorcycle chic” trend, is the “80s punk” trend. This look includes lots of studs, heavy boots, safety pins and leather pants.

For college girls looking to incorporate these looks into their daily wardrobes on a budget, start by updating a few of your accessories for less than the amount of your grocery bill.

  • 60s Look:  Try looking for brightly-colored cat eye sunglasses, featured on the runway of Betsey Johnson, and handbags in neon bright colors and retro prints.
  • 70’s Bohemian Trend:  Seek out accessories with lots of tassels, lace, and crochet.
  • 80’s Punk: The key embellishment is studs. To incorporate this look into your look without going overboard, try a studded belt or bag.
