Dermot Kennedy: The New Music You Didn’t Know You Needed

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UNL chapter.

Dermot Kennedy has been around for quite some time, but he’s just now gaining recognition with some of his songs that blew up on Spotify. He’s been called “the Irish Ed Sheeran” and “the poet of our generation” by some in YouTube comments, and I would have to agree. He’s a lyrical genius and there’s something about his melodies that breaks my heart, but also makes me want to go frolicking in the rain at the same time.

I first discovered this beautiful blessing of a singer from my Apple Music recommendations. “Boston” was the top recommended song on the list, and from the first note he sang I was hooked.

“After Rain” has over 20 million plays on Spotify, for a good reason. It’s an enchanting song and you can feel his emotion with every word he sings.

This next one isn’t on his new EP that just came out in March of this year and it’s not on Spotify or Apple Music, but I have been watching the live video of him performing “For Island Fires and Family” on repeat for a week and I have been so emotional because of it. It might be my favorite song by him so far!

“Shelter” has the lyrics “So step inside, ’cause that night is cold; it don’t deserve such a smile” and “I bet they had you in mind when naming the rose” and “He tried to write down how he felt about the girl, he kept running out of paper, he’ll wait for her” and I think that’s enough to get anyone to fall in love with this man, or at least like his music a little bit.
