Commuter’s Guide to Being Connected on Campus

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UNT chapter.

It’s not easy being a commuter student, but you can make the most of it! As long as you plan ahead you can start plugging into campus life in no time. Here’s how to maximize your college experience as a commuter.

Get to Class Early- Before class starts try starting a conversation with some of your peers around you. This may not be as easy in a small class, but if the same people routinely sit next to you keep the conversation going.

Start a Study Group- Once you know a few familiar faces in your classes ask if they want to study together for the next test. This is an easy way to get to know people, even if all you talk about is how hard that midterm is going to be!

Join Clubs- This is by far the BEST way to make friends at your University. If you’re not sure if a club is right for you go to one meeting, so you can at least say you tried. There are so many ways to get involved on campus. Visit Student Activities for a list of clubs or visit OrgSync online. This will link you with other students who have similar interests.

Go to Events on Campus Best of all- most of them are FREE! This is a fun way to cheer on your school’s team and make friends with those around you in the stands.

Get an On-Campus Job- This is a win-win situation, because you will make money and friends! This is a must if you were approved for your college’s work-study program.

If at first you don’t succeed, then just keep trying. It can be intimidating to make new friends to say the least, but be confident and give it time. Everyone wants to make new friends in college, but they might just be shy. Good luck ladies!
