Missing One Direction? PRETTYMUCH May Be the Solution

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UNT chapter.

Where do I start? I am in love with this band! I have been listening to them non-stop for about a year now, and every song they have out is a total bop. Who are they? PRETTYMUCH.

In 2016, music mogul Simon Cowell created another amazing boy band who call themselves Prettymuch (stylized as PRETTYMUCH). As a tradition of most boy bands, there’s five dope guys, all with something to bring to the table. Starting with Edwin Honoret, a 20 year old Bronx native, who originally started singing by doing cover songs on Instagram. Then there’s Nick Mara, a 21 year old from New Jersey, who started off as a hip-hop dancer and definitely has the moves for any teenage heartthrob.  Austin Porter, our oldest member at 22, won the hearts of many fans with his long, blond, California-dude hair, despite being from North Carolina; he is the artsy one of the group; since late 2018, he has chopped the locs and is now sporting a shorter, dark brown cut. Zion Kuwonu, the too-cool-for-school 20 year old with dreads and the Canadian of the “Canadian-American” part of the band, is all but wise and the low-key jokester of them all. Last, but certainly not least, and my personal favorite, Brandon Arreaga, the 19 year old from Dallas, with a voice of an angel and the swagger to match.

This Canadian-American pop band has really flown under the radar, but have accomplished so much since their formation.

This group of early 20-something’s gained popularity from their dancing videos and cover songs on social media, including a cover of Charlie Puth’s Attention and choreography tributes to Bruno Mars and Michael Jackson. At the 2017 MTV Video Music Awards, they sang a cappella with their debut single, “Would You Mind.” I’m telling you, this music video is fire!! It reminds me of an 90’s/early 2000s Backstreet Boys video and it screams modern 90s vibes.

With just having finished their 3rd headlining tour, FOMO, and earning 6 nominations for various music awards under their belt, PRETTYMUCH is on their way to becoming one of the bigd groups to keep an eye on. Watching this talented group of guys is hilarious and fun, with songs for any kind of mood.

Are you hype and wanna dance? Listen to  “No More”, “Jello”, or “Would You Mind.”

Feeling flirty? Check out “Hello”, “10,000 Hours”, or “Teacher.”

Missing the bae? “On My Way” or “Healthy” are where it’s at.

Do you just want to sing your heart out and let everything go? Stream “Gone 2 Long – Choir Version”, “Phases”, or “Blind.” They’ve described their sound as “nostalgic, energetic, and very new.” And they’re right; their songs are definitely more heavy on the vocals, which really helps distinguish them from their counterparts who may focus on sounding more pop, trap, or a combination of hip-hop and alternative. But from what they have out right now, R&B, is some of the main sound that runs through their veins.

Are they the new One Direction. No. PRETTYMUCH has their own sound and they excel at one area that 1D didn’t: choreographed dances. Either way, I guarantee you that you’ll have an awesome time listening to these guys and quickly become a BEANZ for life!
