The 80s was a bold and influential decade that transformed everything from music to fashion. Styled evolved to crazy, bright colors and extravagant accessories. While some people believe many ‘80s fashion trends were a complete fail, it’s pretty noticeable that a lot of these trends have returned in the late 2010s. So, like it or not, ‘80’s fashion was and still is iconic. One might say women clothing evoked a message just by being worn!
One style trend that screamed “girl power” was the iconic 80’s power suits. According to Marlen Komar at Bustle, women suits have existed since the 1910s and tuxedos were created by Yves Saint Laurent in 1966, but it’s in the ‘80s decade that power suits became the known image of the powerful, executive woman. The shoulder pads and oversized pieces give the suit a strong appearance. Of course, it wasn’t always praised. It took some getting used to for people to let go of the mindset that “suits are for men”. If you think about it some people still have that mindset, and what shocks, even more, some of those people are women themselves (yikes). This very conflict is what gives power suits the impact it provoked. Women everywhere were seen rocking this powerful outfit usually worn by men, which makes it ten times more dazzling.
While power suits rocked the strength in feminism, lace shirts, in my opinion, rocked feminism in a way that was delicate yet empowering. I mean, you just can’t deny that ‘80s popstar icon Madonna didn’t sport lace shirts (which are usually related to a girly style) in the most punk-rock way. It was usual to see Madonna wearing colorful lace shirts with jackets and gloves. Actually, she frequently wore lace-everything: gloves, hairbands, socks, and skirts. It’s no surprise that lace shirts would become a big trend for women in this decade since Madonna herself was already so influential.
If you have a formal event but don’t feel like wearing a dress, try a suit! Colorful suits are making a comeback. Style them with high heels and a hand purse and you’re good to go. Even though lace shirts aren’t that trendy right now, they were a few years back. Still, if it’s your style don’t be afraid to be bold, and be yourself.
