An important part of every hair routine is a hair mask. Hair masks make a huge difference on wash days and, consequently, the final appearance of the hair. One of their important benefits is that “they protect hair from an aggressive external environment, make them more shiny and silky, they restore, hydrate, nourish and moisturize”. Every hair is different, so you have to find what is best for you. You also need to find out what you are looking for in a mask: moisture, controlling frizz, growth, shininess or repairs. Different hair types require different types of care. The same thing goes for hair masks.

Hair masks by top brands are usually filled with different types of chemicals that can harm your hair. The more natural a product is, the better it will work on your hair. I’m gonna share with you three different types of hair masks: one for moisture, one for growth and two for repairs. These masks are easy to make; you can find all the ingredients in your kitchen, and they are going to leave your hair feeling and looking.

Moisturizing Mask

You only need two ingredients: olive oil and whole fat yogurt. The measurements are ¼ cup of yogurt and 1 tablespoon of olive oil. It’s a ratio of about 4:1, if you want to make a different amount of product. Mix in both ingredients and apply to your hair for 15 to 30 minutes. Then, rinse off and wash hair normally. This will give moisture to your hair and protect it from external damage.

  • Olive oil: rich in moisture, adds shine to the hair, keeps it healthy and stronger.

  • Whole fat yogurt: rich in vitamins, locks moisture and can help your hair grow.

If you have oily hair, you can still use this mask because adding oil helps to control the natural oil your hair produces. If you do not like to use oils in your hair, you can use baking soda instead because it will act as an absorbent for the oil.

Growth Mask

The ingredients for this one are 1 tablespoon of coconut oil, 1 egg and 1 tablespoon of matcha green tea powder. The combination of these three products stimulates your hair growth and cleans your hair. Mix first the powder with the coconut oil and then whisk the egg in. Voila! You have your mask! Put it on for 30 minutes and then rinse off and wash your hair. You can use this mask weekly to make it work and see the difference.

  • Coconut oil: essential nutrients that penetrate the scalp for overall health and growth.

  • Egg: rich in proteins, boosts the hair growth rate you have and promote a healthy new growth.

  • Matcha green tea powder: has antioxidants that work for hair stimulation for growth (and it can ease dandruff too!)

We all know that coconut oil it’s a great thing to use for literally anything. Do you have a problem? Pour coconut oil on it, and it will be resolved! This mask will make your hair healthy, and it will boost the growth process of your hair.

Repairing Mask

For this mask, you will need 1 ripe banana and a tablespoon of honey. This mask will help your frizziness, which, we all know, can be very difficult to manage and not everyone likes it. To mix these ingredients, you will blend them until the mixture is a smooth one. Apply the mask to your hair, concentrating on the ends. For better results, use a shower cap after you have applied the mask to lock in the heat. Heat will help the penetration, locking in more moisture. Use the mask for 20 minutes and rinse off. Use 1-2 times per week.

  • Banana: protein among other nutrients that boost the healthiness of the hair and help repair it.

  • Honey: natural humectant, provides long-lasting hydration for controlling frizz.

An important fact to controlling the frizz is the moisture. You have to learn how much moisture your hair retains and how much it needs. Remember that you have to find what works for you so feel free to experiment. You can always wash your hair again if it doesn’t work out.

Shining and Repair Mask

For this mask, you will need 1 avocado, 2 eggs, 1 tablespoon of honey and 1 tablespoon of coconut oil. Mix all the ingredients in a bowl, apply to your hair from ends to roots, concentrating on the ends. If you focus too much on the roots, it can weigh down your hair and make it more oily. Wear the mask for 15 to 20 minutes and then rinse it off. You can use this mask 1 a 2 times a week, whatever works for you.

  • Avocado: fat content, antioxidants, and anti-inflammatory help tame frizz, moisture, promotes growth and shine.

  • Egg: rich in proteins, boosts the hair growth rate you have and promote a healthy new growth

  • Honey: natural humectant, provides long-lasting hydration for controlling frizz.

  • Coconut oil: essential nutrients that penetrate the scalp for overall health and growth.

Part of the repair process of hair is controlling frizz, adding moisture, boost growth and shine. All of these masks can make your hair healthier, stronger and longer. They are easy and fast to make and very healthy; they do not add chemicals you do not need to your hair. Every person has different types of hair and each type is different. And into these categories of hair, not every hair is the same. What works for me may not work for you. In your hair journey, it is important to have fun with what you put in your hair, try everything, and find what works for you and makes your hair beautiful. Patience and time are important factors in the process because you will not see results after just one use; consistency is key. I hope you find your perfect DIY mask among these and get the best out of your hair. Happy masking!
