Name: Sofía Grossman
Age: 20
Major: Finance and Marketing
1. HCUPR: Aside from being a regular contributor to Her Campus UPR, what other groups and activities are you involved in?
Sofía: I’m the captain of the Jerezanas soccer team and that’s a full, year-round commitment. Aside from playing for our school team, I play for Club Deportivo Barbosa’s Marlins, the female upper league. I’ve been on the Sub-17 and Sub-20 national team and right now I’m waiting to hear back from the league for the 2015 FIFA Women’s Gold Cup in Canada. I’m also chief marketing manager for Hat Trick Fútbol magazine and I contribute articles for them while collaborating with other media sources as a commentator during soccer games. I am also in a lot of different associations on campus, like the FMA (Financial Managerial Association) and AMA (American Marketing Association), which are related to my double major in Finance and Marketing.
2. HCUPR: How do you find the time to do all of that?
Sofía: It’s extremely hard. I have a really strictly planned schedule, but I find that as long as you keep yourself organized and up-to-date, you’ll always be able to find a way to do everything you want to do. There might be one that you’ll have to sacrifice at some point in time but you have to establish priorities: what’s urgent, what’s most important in the moment? And if you have to pull an all-nighter, then you pull an all-nighter.
3. HCUPR: Do you have downtime? How do you unwind after a long day?
Sofía: I sing karaoke [laughs]. I read and watch a lot of television. Television was my first love.
4. HCUPR: What do you watch?
Sofía: A lot of Food Network. HGTV, E! Entertainment, and Discovery Channel. The History Channel, too. And obviously ESPN. And every once in a while a few soap operas. I get hooked.
5. HCUPR: Where is Hat Trick Fútbol magazine available?
Sofía: Our official launch is going to be at Mango’s at Ocean Park on September 28th, and afterwards Hat Trick will be available to the public at different pharmacies, supermarkets, and gas stations all over the Island.
6. HCUPR: As someone who is so accomplished, what words of advice and encouragement would you like to share with anyone reading this?
Sofía: Always look at the long-term opportunities. Look at how the options or choices of the present could affect you in the future. I mean, they’re always going to have some good and some bad: the downside is that they’re going to take away time from personal things that you’d like to do, like go out at night or go to the beach with your friends but at the end of the day, you’re going to grow into a better person. Not to mention the benefits of establishing contacts that might help you in the future. Learn how to prioritize and organize your aspirations. For example, one of my aspirations, ever since I was a little girl and I’ve been playing for twelve years, was to play for Puerto Rico’s national team. I’ve always wanted to be someone who wants to prove wrong that misconception that women aren’t involved in sports journalism. Even the world of finances can be seen as a boys’ club sometimes. I’ve always loved breaking through barriers. I believe that you should never be afraid of being who you are because it’s not what’s “expected” in whatever you want to do. It just takes a little more effort.
