Last night, the University of Puerto Rico Rio Piedras Campus celebrated its 115th Anniversary. The celebration took place in the Plaza Román Baldorioty de Castro in front of La Torre. Those in attendance enjoyed live music featuring UNNA and Pirulo y La Tribu, as well as food and refreshments to help keep us up after a full day of class. And let’s not forget the little extras like coupons ( free McFlurries, anyone?) and, of course, condoms… with a lollipop…? They know what’s up. There were various booths offering promotions and entertainment, and even the UPRRP Dance Team put in their two cents.

The night opened with a performance by UNNA, a local female band.

The duo gave their unique take on various popular songs, such as “Sexy Movimiento” by Wisin y Yandel and “Lamento Boliviano” by Los Enanitos Verdes. Throughout their performance, these ladies switched instruments, alternating between the guitar and the box drum, all while singing as well! Talk about multitasking; I can’t even read and walk without stumbling!

UNNA was certainly a refreshing start to this night of celebration. After their opening, it was time for some salsa, courtesy of Pirulo y La Tribu.

Their contagious good vibes infected us all. They encouraged everyone to lose their inhibitions and embrace all that which makes us unique. It was a great space for dancing and enjoying a good, stress-free time with friends. One of the more memorable moments of the night, however, would have to go to the impromptu dance-off between the host and the UPRRP Dance Team. Now, I had mixed feelings about this host. He made some comments that were a little tone deaf, especially now that the social climate is undoubtedly fighting for awareness… Then again, what is a party without this kind of papelón?

As to the fashion… don’t worry, I won’t criticize that person who wore last season’s trends. What is that anyway? None of that, no. But, I couldn’t help but notice the amount of denim skirts last night! Seriously, the outfit of choice seemed to be denim skirt, t-shirt, converse, and a crossbody bag. Safe to say, this is the current trend for Jerezanas. Looking good, ladies. *wink*

You could dance to Pirulo y La Tribu or you could visit the various booths available for other fun activities: gaming, trying on makeup, and even hair dying. There was something for everyone.

                                                                                                         Clairol

                                                                                                       Monster

For most, last night was the perfect ending to the first week of this new “semester,” which already promises to be particularly stressful. We wouldn’t have it any other way, though.

So, this one’s for you, IUPI! And to many more years of education.
