There’s always a person responsible for effective teamwork and victories. That’s why for this Justas 2014, taking place April 6- April 12, HC-UPRM wants you to know the people responsible for keeping our teams together and strong.
Meet Heriberto Martínez, Track & Field assistant coach, UPRM relay runner and holder to our university’s 100 meters record. Read on to know more about the hard work put into this event.
Name: Heriberto Martínez Méndez
Major: Bachelor’s degree in Horticulture, Masters in Crops Protection
Team: Track & Field
HCUPRM: What is your role as assistant coach?
HMM: I work with female and male relays athletes. I keep attention and called them up on their paces, transition zones. I’m in charge of their warm-up, baton passing techniques, and drill practices. I keep an eye for the athlete’s start and their arms movement.
HCUPRM: How is your relation with the team?
HMM: Well, I ran for the UPRM Track & Field team for four years in the relay event, so the coaches know me well and so do some of the athletes competing this year. The team respects me and cares for me overall.
HCUPRM: How has been the experience and work leading up to this event (Justas)?
HMM: The experience has been amazing, being able to help others with my knowledge and seeing that hey actually listen and improve is the most rewarding part. It’s like raising a child, because you get to see their results and share the same experience.
HCUPRM: What do you like the most about your job as assistant coach?
HMM: Besides being able to still be present in what used to be my events, sharing the little knowledge I have with others.
HCUPRM: What can UPRM fans expect from your team’s participation this Justas 2014?
HMM: There are some athletes that seem promising of bringing the UPRM some medals. There is Anthony Dumeng (400 meters hurdle), George Rivera (high jump), the female 4×400 relay team and Ashley Laureano (3k steeplechase): all possible medals for the UPRM.
