17 Rookie Mistakes of a College Freshman

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at URI chapter.

1. Enrolling in 8 a.m. classes.

Trust upperclassmen when we say don’t do this do yourself.

2. Getting dressed up for those 8 a.m. classes.

Take off that cute dress and go put on a sweatshirt.

3. Wearing your lanyard around your neck.

Stop it, put it in your backpack right now.

4. Wearing your high school letterman jacket.

We get it, you peaked in high school.

5. Sitting in the front row the first day of classes.

Calm down, it’s syllabus week.

6. Asking everyone, “are you a freshman?”

Then getting the response “No I’m a senior…”

7. Asking for directions everywhere on campus.

… As you’re running across the quad.

8. Constantly locking yourself out of your dorm room.

Bring your card everywhere.

9. Using your meal plan way too much.

The freshman 15 is real.

10. Thinking you and your roommate should be best friends.

You’ll probably end up never speaking to her again after this year is over.

11. Staying together with your high school boyfriend.

It will not last, just rip it off like a Band-Aid and call it quits.

12. Thinking you can bring a whole U-Haul truck to school and everything will fit in your little dorm room.

You cannot fit that futon or that giant carpet in there.  Leave it at home.

13. Getting way too sloppy at parties.

Control yourself.

14. Buying all the textbooks the professor put on the syllabus.

Silly you, you’ll never use that.

15. Complaining that college is “so hard.”

I’m sorry, do you have an internship along with three seminar classes that are each three hours long? Take a seat, freshie. Intro to Music is not that difficult.

16. Going home every weekend.

Stay at school and enjoy college. It goes by faster than you think.

17.  Not appreciating it.

Freshman year is so fun and exciting.  Take advantage of all these new opportunities and welcome this new chapter of your life with open arms!
