How To Survive Being Single On Valentine’s Day

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at URI chapter.

February 14th can be described by expensive flowers, heart shaped everything and 24 hours of extreme PDA. I like to think St. Valentine didn’t know what he was getting himself into when he wrote that first card. Dearest single ladies, embrace the freedom and make this V-Day your day to shine brighter than the sparkling diamonds on the wrists of so many.

1. Gifts, gifts, and more gifts.

Yes, I mean TREATS. Who said you have to wait around for prince charming to buy you a dozen dark chocolate covered strawberries? Or that really nice Pandora ring that you keep adding to your accessories board on Pinterest? Today is the day you are allowed to spend money on the one person who deserves it the most, YOU.

2. Get up. Get dressed.

Turn off the depressing music and save the drama for your mama. Throw on that brand new LBD that you have been waiting to wear. The days of single girls hiding beneath layers of their ex-boyfriend’s hoodies are over.

3. Send yourself flowers.

Maybe mom and dad sent you a nice arrangement to make your day. If not, get out there and buy yourself the most beautiful bunch you see. It’s been proven that fresh flowers in the home have positive effects on mental health. I think we could all use a little savasana on a day like today, am I right?

4 Go out to dinner with your soul sister.

Galentine’s Day is so real so if you haven’t heard, your BFF is the only valentine you actually need. Order whatever you want and finish the plate because you work hard and you deserve it. Not to mention the added bonus of looking around and seeing couples trying hard to keep the conversation going
 Do less.

5. Buy the BIG bottle.

Of all the days to splurge at the liquor store
today is the day. Some of us love some Grey Goose and others prefer a nice Merlot from Napa. Either way, spend the extra money simply because you deserve it (and you’re gonna need it).

6. Go to the movies.

Fifty Shades of Grey comes out this week. Need I say more?

7. Throw a party or, if you’re of legal age, go to your favorite bar.

Newsflash ladies; in a world full of commitment-phobic millennials, you are truly not alone. Get out there and celebrate your freedom with all of the other single people. Embrace yourself, bachelorettes!

8. Stay home & binge watch Rom-Coms.

Sometimes we are just looking for the perfect excuse to stay in. Pop some kettle corn, turn on that heated blanket, and grab a box of tissues cause tonight is about to get real.

9. Getaway.

It just so happens that the worst holiday ever invented falls right in the middle of the dullest month of the year. There is no better time than the present to take a little vaca alone or with the best of friends. Channel your inner wanderlust and go chase the sun.

And, if you need just a little more confidence on the big day, may I suggest a ‘Yonce dance party with your pals? Go forth and be fabulous single ladies!
