Why Snapchat Is A Blessing and A Curse

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at URI chapter.

When Snapchat was released in September of 2011, the world was amazed by this simple, yet brilliant concept. Users can now take photographs or videos, add text and drawings, and send them to a controlled list of recipients at the ease of a few clicks. There’s more… They could They can also set a time limit for how long recipients can view their Snaps before it disappears, forever. While this provided users with an easy way to keep their friends updated on their lives; there is no question this privilege comes with some consequences. Here are some reasons why Snapchat is both a blessing and a curse:

Blessing: It provides you with a reason to say hey to your crush, and let him know that you look #flawless today.

Curse: When you accidentally send your heineous good morning selfie to the wrong person.

   Vs.

Blessing: You don’t have to tell people about that awesome party you went to on Friday night. They already know.

Curse: The person who you had plans with and then ditched knows you were at that party instead, too.

Vs.

Blessing: The fact that photos disappear after a maximum of 10 seconds. You can’t blackmail me!

Curse: The fact that photos disappear after a maximum of 10 seconds when you’re the one receiving prime blackmailing material from your friends.

Blessing: The update that rid of the feature of being able to see people’s “Best Friends”.

Curse: The more recent update that uses Emoji’s as rankings.

Blessing: Staying up to date on your friends lives’ via their Snapchat story

Curse: The people who document every other minute of their lives.

Blessing: Being notified when someone takes a screenshot.

Curse: The fact that people can still take screenshots.
