5 Ways to Eat Healthily While Studying

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at USC (AU) chapter.

Ok, so we’re all guilty of letting our healthy eating habits slip a little around assessment due dates. It always just seems easier to order some pizza to save cooking or simply go without for a little while.

But when it’s time to do some serious studying, you should be eating even healthier than you normally do no matter how hard it may seem! Here’s five ways to eat healthily while studying.

1. Don’t rely on snacks.
It’s so easy to snack on a packet of chips or some chocolate while you cram and then miss out on a meal. This is not healthy! Eating a proper breakfast, lunch and dinner helps your brain function and gives you plenty of energy to keep hitting the textbooks.

2. Snack healthily.
That being said, you don’t have to completely give up on your snacks! Prepare yourself some simple and yummy snacks to munch on while you do your assignments. Balance the unhealthy with the healthy and toss in some carrot sticks and strawberries with the chips and lollies.

3. Eat foods high in protein.
The neurotransmitters that are in your brain are made up of amino acids developed from protein. So eating foods that are full of protein such as eggs, cheese, meats and nuts will help to keep up the neurotransmitter levels in your brain.

4. Don’t overload on the caffeine and sugar.
So you’ve realised you need to pull an all-nighter to get that assignment done that’s due tomorrow. Resist the urge to chug down some Red Bull or coffees to keep you up! Too much caffeine can make you jittery and unsettled. You can have some coffee, sure… just keep it in moderation.

5. Stay hydrated.
You don’t want to be dehydrated while you study because it can lead to fatigue, dizziness and a lack of ability to focus. So make sure you always keep a bottle of water by your side and keep drinking from it. Also, keeping your water chilled will help to keep you alert.

Keep all that in mind as it comes up to assessment time.

Good luck and happy studying!
